Breakfast Babble: Wish I Could Celebrate Festivals The Way Bollywood Movies Do

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in people.

When it comes to festivals, Bollywood does it best. You know those grand celebrations where everyone dances, sings, and has a blast? Yeah, that’s what I dream of whenever a festival rolls around. Here’s why I wish my celebrations could match the magic of Bollywood.

In a typical Bollywood movie, everyone breaks into dance like they’ve been practising for years when the festival music starts. There’s that one character who suddenly knows every move, even if they’ve just rolled out of bed.

Meanwhile, I’m over here, trying to remember the steps from that one dance class I took in 2010. Why can’t we have spontaneous dance-offs at festivals? Imagine the aunties and uncles in your neighbourhood trying to keep up with your moves while you strut like Shah Rukh Khan!

Have you ever noticed how in every festival scene, there’s always a moment of dramatic family revelation? “I am your long-lost brother!” or “I’ve been in love with you since childhood!” Meanwhile, I’m just trying to find out who ate the last piece of gulab jamun at the family gathering.

Festivals should come with a side of melodrama. I want relatives jumping out of nowhere, declaring their long-hidden feelings while I sit there with my samosas, thinking, “Can we save this for the next family gathering?”

Bollywood has the best outfits during festivals! Everyone is draped in stunning sarees, dazzling lehengas, or perfectly tailored sherwanis. Why can’t my family have an on-set stylist to make us look like we just walked off a movie set?

Every festival celebration in a Bollywood film takes place at a breathtaking location. You have lavish homes, exotic beaches, or picturesque hills where everyone gathers. Meanwhile, my family reunion happens in our cramped living room, fighting over the TV remote. How about a family trip to a scenic destination, complete with picturesque backgrounds for our Instagram posts? I’d trade my backyard for a Bollywood-worthy set any day!

No Bollywood celebration is complete without a love story blooming amidst the festivities. I mean, who wouldn’t want to bump into a charming stranger while taking a selfie with their relatives? I’d love to have a meet-cute moment like, “Oh, I didn’t see you there! You’re just as clumsy as I am!” Instead, the only romance I get is watching my parents argue over who has to wash the dishes after dinner.

I’ll keep dreaming of those vibrant dance numbers, infinite sweets, and melodramatic family moments. Who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll all break into a dance, and I’ll finally remember the steps!

Until then, let’s just enjoy our festivals, even if they lack a bit of that cinematic sparkle. After all, who needs grand celebrations when you can enjoy a good laugh and some delicious food with loved ones?
