A woman in Mumbai has gone viral after she bravely confronted various BJP politicians for blocking roads to carry out a protest, leading to heavy traffic congestion. Now, practically every single one of us, the common citizens, has experienced roads being sealed off for politicians, their convoys, and their rallies.
So while these seemingly important people are able to whizz by on empty roads, the rest of us are often stuck in traffic gridlock that can run for hours sometimes.
This recent incident in Mumbai has once again brought this issue into the spotlight, especially highlighting the utter frustration and anger that regular citizens feel during such times.
It has also launched a fierce debate around the concept of “VIP culture,” the entrenched practice of allowing political events, processions, and cavalcades to take precedence over the movement of ordinary citizens.
What Did The Woman Do?
On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan and various other people were leading a protest march organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under the Mahayuti alliance.
The politicians were accompanied by police officials for the “Mahila Jan Aakrosh March,” a women’s public outrage march, organised by the BJP’s women’s wing in Mumbai’s Worli neighbourhood.
Mahajan also holds the Water Resources and Disaster Management portfolio in the Mahayuti state government.
The march was protesting against the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and Congress over their refusal to support the Women’s Reservation Bill. The bill sought to fast-track 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures.
However, the BJP-led NDA failed to secure enough votes for the bill in the Lok Sabha, as the opposition alleged that the legislation was “delimitation in disguise.”
So, the BJP conducted this protest march. However, what it ended up doing was congesting one of Mumbai’s most congested corridors, leading to the wrath of the public.
One brave woman became a symbol of the public’s anger and frustration during this, when she marched right up to Mahajan and several police officers and confronted them over how they were inconveniencing the public.
The woman, who, according to various reports, was going to collect her child from school, became frantic after she was stuck in traffic for over an hour.
According to various viral clips, she can be heard shouting at both the police and politicians, saying, “Get out of here. You are causing a traffic jam. Say what you want to say in an empty ground, get out of here, don’t stop the traffic. There are hundreds of people waiting, and there is an empty ground right there.”

She can also be heard saying, “Did you not understand? What is wrong with you?” and “Merese koi baat nahi karega. Yahan se iss traffic ko hatao. (I don’t want to talk to anyone. Remove this traffic from here) Shut up!”

The unnamed woman has been showered with support online from all sides. Netizens, who are the common people, have praised her for raising her voice against this situation, something that we all have experienced as well.
Roads being blocked and restricted for the general public because politicians are using them, and it results in unimaginable congestion for the rest of us, who end up stuck in traffic for hours, is nothing new.
User, @HeyParth2, wrote about how the woman was speaking “for a million Indians who get stuck and time is wasted in such unproductive hours.”
Dr Gaurang Vora, a civic activist and co-convenor of The Petition Group, said, “We fully support this woman. It is high time politicians are told that the common man will not tolerate their misbehaviour anymore.”
Activist Anjali Damania tagged Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti in an X/Twitter post, writing, “If we want to hold a protest, is it only Azad Maidan? Then who and why gave the BJP the freedom to take to the streets? This lady was asking questions, and the officers didn’t even bother to look at her? Issue an immediate show-cause notice to those officers,” and whether the police “are the same for everyone, or do they get paid only to work for those in power.”
Activist Dr Avisha Kulkarni also stated how “before elections politicians come to our doorsteps with folded hands seeking votes and once elected they behave arrogantly. Look at the thousands of illegal hoardings they put up around the year in flagrant contempt of the Bombay High Court order. The problem is that government officials, including the police, are afraid to take action because they depend on the politicians for their transfers and postings.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi also supported the woman, posting on her X/Twitter, “Hats off to the lady from Mumbai who showed a mirror to Minister Girish Mahajan and BJP protestors for blocking traffic to carry out their political protest.
In Mumbai, the daily commute includes hours of being stuck in traffic jams, and instead of understanding the fast losing patience at these gatherings/vip movements that hold up traffic the ruling dispensation doesn’t seem to care, even the minister’s attitude is so disrespectful and dismissive.
Why was BJP protesting on the streets instead of designated ground? Who gave them the permission to carry out the protest during peak traffic hours? Why should people suffer due to political showmanship of BJP? Her anger is not just of hers but every single Mumbaikar who face the commute woes.”
Girish Mahajan, speaking with reporters, said, “I will not say it was wrong. Yesterday, there was a women’s ‘Jan Aakrosh Morcha’ organised by women against Congress after the Bill was passed, and thousands of our sisters participated in it.
But when such a march takes place on the road and has to move from one place to another, in this case towards Worli, the road is bound to be blocked, and some inconvenience is inevitable in any protest…
Still, there is a proper way to express anger, and I feel the language used was inappropriate. We had informed them that the road would be cleared within 10 minutes, and we would take care in the future.”
