On November 11, 2024, the new Chief Justice of India (CJI) will take his oath after the current CJI DY Chandrachud retires. Sanjiv Khanna, one of the most senior Supreme Court judges, will be taking over the position of the CJI in just a matter of days now.

His tenure as CJI will be the second shortest, with him serving just six months as the chief of the Supreme Court before he retires on May 13, 2025.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna hails from Delhi and has an impressive family record. He is the nephew of the late former Supreme Court judge HR Khanna, who is best known for his role in the landmark Kesavananda Bharati case of 1973.

Justice Khanna began his judicial career in 2005 when he was given the position of additional judge of the Delhi High Court, and eventually became a permanent judge the next year.

On 18 January 2019, Justice Khanna was promoted to the Supreme Court, and in his years as a judge, he served on some iconic and landmark cases. Here we take a look at some of them:

The Central government announced his appointment as the next Chief Justice of India on Thursday, 31 October 2024.

In an X/Twitter post Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal wrote “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from November 11, 2024.”
