The coronavirus pandemic has shut down the entertainment industry for the time being. Due to government guidelines forbidding large gatherings and telling everyone to work from home, it becomes difficult to shoot new movies or episodes to daily shows.

This has resulted in television networks now re-starting old shows again, just to have some content on their channels and also for the entertainment of audiences that are now stuck at home.

Already several old shows like Ramayana, Mahabharata have started, then other fan favourites like Dekh Bhai Dekh, Shrimanji Shrimatiji, Khichdi, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai have also come back.

This is certainly a nice break from all the ‘naagins’ and what other nonsense that we were earlier seeing on our TVs, making us turn towards OTT services.

However, in the midst of all this, interestingly old advertisements are also making a comeback with Amul being one of the first to air their old 90s ads during the runtime of Ramayana and Mahabharat.

Amul’s Old Ads?

Amul, a popular dairy brand in India, has brought back several of their ads from the late 80’s and 90’s while Ramayana and Mahabharat are airing on Doordarshan currently.

Interestingly many of these ads aired during the original runtime of the two shows back in the day. Some of these ads came out almost 30 years ago, and the brand shared this on their social media, saying that “By popular demand, we are in a retro mode today.. watch the classic #Amul advertisements from the 1990’s on the shows #Ramayan and #Mahabharat on DD today.”

Some of the ads about Amul chocolate even featured the late Neerja Bhanot who became an iconic figure for her bravery during the terrorist hijacking of the Pan Am flight in 1986.

Another one included the ‘Swad India Ka’ or ‘Amul The Taste of India’ commercial.

This one used to be staple for me:

Another ad was about the Amul milk powder:

This ad has the iconic Amul mascot in a kid Krishna get-up:

This Amul ad has the Amul mascot girl winning in a weight lifting competition just from the power of the butter. It even has the catchphrase that we all know so well.

Not Just Amul

It is not just Amul that is re-airing really old ads on TV but even YouTube has picked up a similar strategy. Recently, while watching some videos on YouTube a number of really old ads came on as YouTube ads.

One of them was this one about Usha sewing machine which even has a very young Neena Gupta in it.

Another was about this Captain Cook wheat brand:

While another was about the Ceat Formula 1 tyres:
