Coronavirus restrained all of us from social gatherings, get-togethers, travelling, and whatnot. In short, it restrained us from enjoying our lives as we were used to.
On the other hand, it also inadvertently restrained the number of crimes, deaths, and road fatalities in India, mostly in the first and second phases of lockdown. However, we witnessed a steep rise in crimes against women and domestic violence due to the extended lockdown.
According to Delhi Police, there was a 42% drop in crime rate in Delhi in lockdown 1.0 with only 2,000 cases registered. But when things started getting back to normal, the crime graph also got back to its normal.
Due to an increase in unemployment, many people indulged in criminal activities to earn a livelihood. Even street crime spiked with the ease of coronavirus measures.
A Bizarre Theft
A recent robbery that has come into the news is one of its kind and has never happened before. The robbers didn’t steal any gold or any amount of money but cow dung. This peculiar theft has happened in Chhattisgarh.
To our surprise, the thieves had not stolen the cow dung for fun but they actually planned to sell it.
The theft was a result of the “Godhan Nyay Yojana” scheme launched by the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel. It aims to procure cow dung at Rs. 2 per kg from livestock and dairy owners.
Nearly 100 kilograms of cow dung was stolen by the robbers at Rojhi village in Koriya district of North Chhattisgarh.

The farmers collected the cow dung to sell it to the state government to make use of the ‘Yojana’ launched and earn some money.
When the farmers found 100 kg of cow dung missing, they lodged a complaint with the local Gautham Samithi, a body that manages cattle shed premises. In return, the Samithi approached the police and filed the complaint.
Under the Godhan Nyay Yojana, the government had deposited Rs. 1.65 crore in the accounts of over 46,000 cattle owners.
It has attached an economic value to cow-dung after people started manufacturing eco-friendly products with the use of cow dung. Rakhis, earthen lamps, nameplates, and many more things are moulded out of it.
The villagers got concerned about the robbery but according to Sangeeta Lakra, the Koriya district public relations officer, the issue was internally settled before police could do the inquiry.
Lockdown Robberies
The cow dung theft was funny and cranky but some more robberies amidst coronavirus have made us ponder over the reason behind them.
Recently, a 39-year-old man from Iowa, USA, stole a bottle of hand sanitizer. Yes, just a sanitizer, maybe because it has certainly become a treasure and some people may go to any limit to get it.
A few days ago, when people stocked their houses with toilet papers fearing their short supply in the future, armed robbers in Hong Kong stole hundreds of toilet rolls worth more than 130 dollars.
Robbers even started making use of face masks to hide their identity and steal from open bank ATMs. After all, a face mask is a compulsion, you know.
And now, the cow dung theft has left us in wonders. Do we really need to keep an eye on sh*t too?
Well, this is the year 2020 my friend, we can’t complain about these small things!
