Breakfast Babble: Why Does Starting Afresh Feel So Threatening?

-

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things, too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in, people.

I wonder why we get so settled in our comfort that starting afresh, even for our own good, feels… threatening.

Maybe it’s because comfort feels familiar. Old patterns, no matter how bad for us, give us a sense of control. Like we know what we’re doing. We know what to expect, how to react, and somehow that feels safe.

But starting afresh takes that away.

Whether it’s moving to a new city or starting to go to the gym. Trying anything new places you in a situation where you don’t know what you’re doing. Where the outcome feels like a blur, and every next move needs to be planned.

And that’s exactly why it feels uncomfortable. Because for a moment, you lose the version of yourself that knew how things worked.

Like, suddenly, there’s this fear of getting it all wrong. You have to think, make mistakes, and fail over and over again to get things right.

Maybe that’s the reason why so many of us have stayed in a friendship that no longer serves us, or let go of opportunities that might have worked so well in our favour. Not because we don’t want better, but because better feels unfamiliar. And unfamiliarity is scary.

But over time, I’ve realised something. Everything in my life has taught me exactly why I should take the chance. Because who knows, taking a chance might actually take you to a place you were too afraid to even imagine?

Maybe that’s what makes it so difficult in the first place. Because not everyone around you has done it. There is a chance you mess it up, but maybe that’s not the point.

Maybe the point isn’t to get it all correct in the first attempt, but to make an attempt first. Because everything we know now was once something we tried for the first time.

And maybe, one day, when we look back, we might realise that if we didn’t start afresh back then, none of it would’ve made sense now.
