The topic of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government potentially changing India’s name to ‘Bharat’ is one of the most talked about in recent days.
It started after an image of the dinner invite to the G20 delegation from Rashtrapati Bhawan came out mentioning the President as the ‘President of Bharat’ instead of ‘President of India’.
Soon after news came out that the government was planning to put forward an official proposal and change the name during the special session of Parliament scheduled from 18 to 22 September.
What Did Virender Sehwag Tweet?
A lot many celebrities and public personalities came forward with posts referring to ‘Bharat’ or showing outright support for the name change.
Amitabh Bachchan, on Tuesday, tweeted out “Bharat mata ki jai” getting a lot of attention, especially amid the debate and controversy that the topic itself sparked among India’s name change.
RSS member Sheetal Chopra also shared a video of Pawan Kalyan, a Telugu actor who wanted India to be renamed Bharat in a 2019 press conference.
She wrote “Pawan Kalyan in his speech clearly states should identify ourselves with the name Bharat because it is the original name of our country. India is the name given by foreign rulers.”
Virender Sehwag also joined the train tagging Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah and tweeting on September 5th “I have always believed a name should be one which instills pride in us. We are Bhartiyas, India is a name given by the British & it has been long overdue to get our original name ‘Bharat’ back officially. I urge the @BCCI @JayShah to ensure that this World Cup our players have Bharat on our chest”.

He also wrote“Team India nahin #TeamBharat. This World Cup as we cheer for Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah, Jaddu, may we have Bharat in our hearts and the players wear jersey which has “Bharat” @JayShah” in reference to the recently unveiled ODI World Cup 2023 team.

He also made another tweet including a video of Sadhguru with the caption “In this video from 2014, a wonderful explanation by @SadhguruJV on the science behind the name, and importance of calling our country Bharat. The country getting renamed Bharat will happen through Parliament, but this World Cup our Team must play with the name “Bharat” @JayShah”.

Some netizens, however, did not like Sehwag’s take and called him out for playing with the ‘India’ tag as a cricketer for many years.
One user wrote “Virender Sehwag played for the Indian Cricket Team for 14 years. He wore a jersey written with ‘India’ in front for all these years. Today he says, only Bharat gives the pride and India is term given by British. If he didn’t feel pride, he should have left the team and let someone else talking his place. Just to please some supreme leaders, people have sold their soul and left no dignity. More importantly, cricket was also invented by British.”
Abhishek Choudhary, author of ‘Vajpayee: Ascent of the Hindu Right 1924–77’ also commented “Since cricket is also a British sport, why not ban it and instead motivate our youngsters to take up gilli-danda. Let’s declare it our Rashtriya Khel, make you the national team coach.”
