Miranda House students are furious after what happened during a college fest a few days ago that had men trying to scale walls after being reportedly denied entry and then going on to grope and harass the female students inside.

Miranda House under the ambit of the University of Delhi is a women’s only college, however, it often opens its doors to all gender during special events and campus fests. The same was happening on October 14th, 2022 when the college was hosting its annual Diwali Mela called Onella and was open for all students with a valid Delhi University admit card.

But what ended up happening was something that no one really wanted, at the same time nothing new as such cases have often occurred across the years. A sad shame really on the mindset of some students and the security such colleges have.

What Happened?

A Twitter user Sobhana, a current student at Miranda House shared a video of men trying to climb over the college walls and get inside the campus. She stated that “The videos were circulating on our internal WhatsApp groups and social media, so I asked students to send it to me.”

In another video, the men are apparently shouting “Ramjas ka Naara hai, Miranda poora hamara hai (Ramjas’s slogan, all of Miranda is ours)”.

Another user @iamshubhamsk as a reply posted what their sister told them about what happened writing, “they flocked all the gates and demanded to be let in claiming that they wouldn’t let anyone go in or out if they were not allowed inside. Jammed the main road and had to be ultimately led in to prevent further hooliganism.”

A Hindustan Times report quoted Anushka Chaudhary, a second-year BA student, who was present there saying that “There were hundreds of people and most of them were men. It was uncontrollable. The security had shut the gates and even those who were students of Miranda House were not allowed inside. Me and my friend managed to go inside via the hostel gate.”

She further added that “The event had been cancelled and stalls were asked to shut. The principal was asking the students to ask the boys to leave the premises. I saw the boys entering the hostel, picking up girls’ clothing, and parading them around. They were passing comments on how they were dressed in skimpy clothes.”

Twitter has been raging over this for the past few days, with people expressing a lot of anger and disgust with the way things happened.

The same user also added that “Delhi University needs to get its shit together. they have sky-high cutoffs every single year and provide absolutely no sense of security to its students in return.”

Arushi Bhaskar a journalist at The Indian Express also expressed that this was nothing new for the female students of the college. As an alumn of the college, she wrote “By my second year, the charm of attending concerts and having fun at these events had worn off, and was replaced by a sense of fear and annoyance at the “har saal ka jhamela”.

When I was in my first year, a man masturbated next to a friend during a concert at the college fest, and I will never forget her traumatised look. “He was grinning like a madman when I looked back to see what was happening,” she told us afterwards, her voice shaking with tears.”

Currently, the Delhi Police has registered a case against unnamed students with Sagar Singh Kalsi, deputy commissioner of police, north revealing that “A case under section 354D (stalking), 509 (outraging modesty of a woman), 448 (punishment for house trespass), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and investigation has been taken up. Teams have obtained CCTV footage from the college.”
