Kolkata is a place where wonders happen in the most unexpected ways. This time, it was about an old man, helping his wife fight cancer with the help of art.

The Man

The name reads Swapan Sett, a resident of Balaram Dey Street. This old man is a sculptor, painter and violinist. He defines the heart and soul of Kolkata as he played his fiddle to raise money for his wife’s treatment.

He spent over 17 years trying to fund his wife’s uterine cancer, which was diagnosed in 2002. She underwent treatment in Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital and was declared cancer-free in 2019.

Even after his wife was cured, he continued playing for the public and travelling around the city doing so. His uniform is mostly a white kurta and dhoti, and people have come forward to buy his music CDs.

A Wish

Being a resident of Kolkata, I wanted to meet Mr. Sett and congratulate, commend and tell him that what he did was very rare and that people like him existing make the world a better place, even if it was by a little.

I had the pleasure of meeting him at the inauguration of Harry’s Bistro, a diner in Salt Lake, where he mesmerized the audience with his brilliant music. I happened to click a picture with him and recorded him live.

Upon interaction, I got to know that he isn’t much of a social person and plays music upon invitation very rarely. It was sheer luck and timing that I happened to be at the right place at the right time to watch him play live.
