Kim Kardashian being cancelled over one thing or another is nothing new. Her entire brand as per many opinions, is somewhat based on giving people the shock factor and getting traction through people talking about her.

It has certainly benefited her considering she is earning in the millions with a net value of $1 billion, owns a variety of businesses and is a very well-known name across the globe.

But a recent ad for her new product, a nipple bra, had her getting bashed by an environment organisation for ‘greenwashing’.

What Happened?

On October 27, 2023, Kim Kardashian shared a new bra for her clothing brand SKIMS. Posting the ad she wrote, “COMING OCT 31: THE @SKIMS ULTIMATE NIPPLE BRA. Perfect fullness with a built-in, faux nipple for shock factor – meet the newest innovation to our Ultimate Bra collection on Tuesday, October 31 at 9AM PT / 12PM ET. Join the waitlist for early access to shop.

In addition to our investment in advancing carbon removal, SKIMS is proud to donate 10% of sales from our SKIMS Ultimate Nipple Bra, as a one-time donation, to @1percentftp – a global network with thousands of businesses and environmental organizations working together to support people and the planet.”

In the ad, Kim Kardashian is seen working on a computer and saying a couple of lines about how climate change is affecting the planet saying things like how ‘the sea levels are rising’ and ‘ice sheets are shrinking’.

But the ad itself has nothing to do with climate change itself, instead, it to launch her new bra that is styled to mimic erect nipples. In the campaign ad she said, “The Earth’s temperature is getting hotter and hotter. The sea levels are rising. The ice sheets are shrinking.

And I’m not a scientist, but I do believe everyone can use their skill set to do their part. That is why I’m introducing a brand-new bra with a built-in nipple, so no matter how hot it is, you’ll always look cold.”

This while certainly going viral with people either being impressed by the product, disgusted by it or just applauding Kim’s intention to go for a shock factor, one sector did not find it all that funny.

SKIMS known for its shapewear and undergarments and Kim K were called out by Greenpeace an international environmental NGO (nongovernmental organization) known for focusing on environmental issues and expanding corporations, governments and more engaging in environmental misdeeds.

On November 17, 2023, Greenpeace posted on their social media profiles claiming that Kim’s ad for her new bras was an example of ‘greenwashing’.

In a series of tweets about “The hard truth about Kim’s new “nipple bra” they wrote, “Using melting glaciers and rising sea levels as a punchline to improve your profit margins makes a mockery of an issue that is devastating millions of lives.”

It further said that “We desperately need global icons like Kim to champion the fight against climate change. Sadly, this isn’t what’s happening here.

Kim’s new advert perpetuates the harmful profit-driven system accelerating the climate crisis and diverts attention away from more impactful actions, like the UN Global Plastics Treaty, which offer a real chance for systemic change.”

The NGO also claimed that Kardashian’s bit about donating 10% of the sales of the product doesn’t seem genuine writing “Kim Kardashian is co-opting the language of climate activists to promote a plastic product made from petrochemicals. Her promise of a “one-off payment” of 10% of sales is alarmingly vague, making it difficult to understand its impact.”
