YouTube channels being hacked into is nothing new, but there is usually a type of channel that are often hacked. These channels are geared more toward the general public, enjoy a pretty high viewership, have millions of subscribers and more.

But the news of Indian government’s Sansad TV’s YouTube channel being suspended “for allegedly violating YouTube’s community guidelines” was certainly something interesting to see.

What guidelines could a channel that hosts live proceedings of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha along with relevant recorded programmes could have done to get terminated by YouTube, especially a channel that is from the Indian government?

The answer is that the channel has actually been hacked and was posting unauthorised content, perhaps leading to the eventual termination.

Sansad TV YouTube Channel Hacked?

Sansad TV is actually a combined channel for Lok Sabha TV and Rajya Sabha TV after the two separate YouTube channels were merged into one last September.

However, early on 15th February, the YouTube channel was hacked by as of yet unknown group or person.

Sansad TV’s official Twitter account quickly posted a statement in regards to the same, explaining the situation.

As per the statement, the unathorised activity started on the channel sometime around 1 am on Tuesday. Among unknown live streams being carried out on the channel, the name itself was changed to ‘Ethereum’ by the unknown group of ‘scamsters’.

The statement reads that “YouTube channel-Sansad TV was compromised by some scamsters today (February 15). YouTube is addressing the security threat”.

While the social media team of the channel was able to gain access to the account to change back the name and get it restored around 3 am however, an error notice still appears for the channel.

Notice like “The video is no longer available because the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated” are still showing on the channel.

Alerts had been sent by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in) about the potential ‘hacking’ and as per reports, YouTube had started work to fix the security issue quickly in order to restore the channel.

This is actually not something that is very rare or never been done before. Previously also Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter account itself had been hacked for a short while who had then posted how India had “officially adopted bitcoin as legal tender”. The post also included a link and asked people to hurry up and buy also adding that “The government has officially bought 500 BTC and is distributing them to all residents of the country”.

Not just that, but regular YouTube channels that have a decent amount of viewership have also experienced such types of hacking where cryptocurrency or various other groups have taken control of the channel, and then posting their own content in order to scam people.
