But, sometimes you can’t forget.
Orphans, slaughter, poverty, and enslavement? What a way to portray India to people across the globe, most of whom will only get to see the side of India that is projected on the big screen. The Oscars favourite thus wounded the pride of many Indians in spite of its tremendous success.
Now, we would have gladly buried the hatchet and bore no grudges if Hollywood had learnt its lesson and had portrayed India more justly in the following years. Sadly, it still has a long way to go.

Dirty roads roamed by dogs and cows, dilapidated houses on the verge of collapsing, children playing amongst filth – these are some of the Indian scenario stereotypes carefully crafted by the West to ensure that India fits into its ‘Third World’ label. Brush the whole set with a ting of sepia to get that dusty look and we’re good to go. Don’t even get me started on the behavioural stereotypes.
