Watch: Dark And Racist Truth Behind Yale University

Yale University, with its prestigious reputation and rich history, harbors a past that’s not without shadows. Deep within its ivy-covered walls lies a history tainted by racism and discrimination.

Founded in 1701, Yale’s early years were entangled with the transatlantic slave trade. Many of its benefactors were slave owners, and the university itself owned slaves who worked on its grounds. These uncomfortable truths underscore Yale’s complicity in the exploitation and oppression of Black individuals.

Even after the abolition of slavery, Yale remained a bastion of exclusion. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that Black students were admitted in significant numbers, thanks to the tireless efforts of civil rights activists. Yet, even then, they faced systemic barriers and racial prejudice.

Yale’s dark past isn’t confined to its treatment of Black individuals. It’s also been marred by discriminatory policies against Jewish and other marginalized groups.

Let’s take a look at the past of the university.

Acknowledging this history is crucial for Yale and its community. By confronting the past, the university can work towards a more inclusive and equitable future.

Today, Yale is taking steps to address its historical injustices, including initiatives to diversify its student body and curriculum, but the journey toward reconciliation and justice is ongoing.
