The previous week, Türkiye issued two travel warnings separately for the United States and for Europe asking its citizens to be alert. But why?

Well, conditions in both nations aren’t good and hence, Türkiye has issued this warning.

Travel Warning

Türkiye alerted its citizens about possible Islamophobic, xenophobic, and racist attacks in the United States and Europe. It also asked its citizens residing in these two countries to act calmly and stay away from areas where demonstrations might take place.

In the first travel advisory that was issued, the Turkish government warned of “dangerous levels of religious intolerance and hatred in Europe”. Then, a separate travel warning was issued for the United States that said, “There have recently been verbal and physical attacks against foreigners and acts of racism committed throughout the United States.”

This comes after Türkiye’s western allies issued a travel advisory for its citizens residing in Türkiye over possible terror attacks.

Several embassies in Ankara like Germany, France, Italy, and the US issued warnings to its citizens in Türkiye stating that there could be “possible retaliatory attacks by terrorists against places of worship.” They have also warned them against going to travel hotspots in Türkiye.

Why Is This Happening?

These warnings have come in response to an incident that happened a few days ago when a Danish-Swedish far-right activist, Rasmus Paludan, burned the Quran in Stockholm. He recreated the act in front of a mosque and the Turkish embassy in Copenhagen.

Following the incident, Türkiye canceled the planned visit of the Swedish defense minister and criticized the Danish ambassador, and accused Denmark of promoting “hate crime”.

What Did The Turkish President Say?

Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan slammed the Quran burning incident stating that it is an insult to everyone, especially Muslims. Erdogan also warned Sweden not to expect any help from Türkiye regarding its bid for NATO membership.

Notably, Finland and Sweden have decided to end their official neutrality and fully join NATO as its members. However, this process requires all 30 members of the state to agree. Türkiye and Hungary are the only two nations that haven’t given their vote yet.
