Indian TV shows. Le sigh. What all can we say about them?
Where the western television sector and Netflix, of course, is only rising in quality content, almost to the point of beating the film sector, on the other hand, Indian television is still stuck in the same rut of endless and boring saas-bahu sagas.
Not to say that we haven’t had some extremely successful and amazing shows on our end. Office Office, Saans, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Buniyaad and many more have established themselves as some of the greatest Indian shows ever created.
But alas, in the last few years, I feel like there has been a serious dearth of good television shows.
That I feel is a big reason why web series like The Pitchers, TVF Tripling, Permanent Roommates and more are gaining serious ground with the youth of India who desperately wants to watch good content that deals with life in India.
Western content though good, is not always able to actually capture how life in India goes or the culture issues, peer and more areas that we have to deal with.

However, this does not mean that we never have any good shows on our dear little idiot box. But due to certain reasons these Indian tv shows just never manage to last, what exactly are they you ask, well:
1. Good Idea But TRP:
Alright so first off I would say that a lot of shows start off on a good note but either TRP or time makes them eventually go stale.
TRP more often than not, forces the producers and the team behind a certain show, to ultimately go down the same rotten route of marriage, family troubles and of course the mandatory villain who is just deadest against the protagonist.
In some special cases the show does not deviate from its course, like Balika Vadhu and Diya Aur Bati Hum that remained true to their original story, however the length of the show just washed away any good points that the show had garnered over its run.
See this is where I feel our the TPTB (the powers that be) behind Indian television fall short. They simply do not know when to end a certain show and in that, many good shows that had earned respect for their content just slither away in nothingness until the TPTB have no other option but to finish it for forever.
2. Regressive And Frankly Stupid Content:
While the above point talked about how some shows start on a good note, there are others who do not have even that. Their start only is just so regressive and ultra stupid that you just know there is never going to be any hope for them.
And yet still, shows like Kumkum Bhagya (cannot believe this show is still on), Naagin, Brahmarakshas (wth is even this show??!!) are still on air.
I genuinely want to know who watches them, and who in their right mind is still making this show?
3. Where You Media?
There are a few such Indian tv shows which seem to be tackling some extremely relevant and previously taboo topics. Shakti, which I have gotten to know recently is about a transgender person, is literally about such a great topic.
But clumsy writing and direction and little to no media coverage does not highlight shows that are talking of such important issues. Which to be honest, is a real shame.
Signing off I would just like to say that, we mustn’t think that we cannot come up with good content, but unfortunately the people making these shows and the people watching would rather have mindless and idiotic shows rather than watch something of real value.
