“Puri Tarah Se Gana Re-Dubb Hota Hai” Shaan Reveals Truth About Singing Reality Shows

-

Indian singing reality shows are a sector that seems to have no end. With at least 50 such shows, including major Hindi and regional versions, there is no dearth of these shows with various singers competing in different ways to be the best. But recently, veteran Indian singer Shaan revealed certain bits about the behind-the-scenes of these shows and how they are made.

This is not the first time that someone has spoken about the hidden realities of these so-called reality TV shows. From scripted judgements to fake stories only meant to make the audience emotional, contestants being harassed, and even the results being doctored in certain cases, enough problems have come up over the years.

Although that hasn’t led to any major change, however, people these days want to be more aware of how true these reality shows are from what is being shown on screen.

What Did Shaan Say?

Shaan, considered among the greatest playback singers of India and called the “Golden Voice of India”, has been associated with various singing reality shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, The Voice India Kids (2016), and Music Ka Maha Muqqabla, to name a few.

The voice behind iconic songs like Musu Musu Haasi Deu, Woh Ladki Hai Kahan, Kuch To Hua Hai, Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe, Main Aisa Kyun Hoon, My Dil Goes Mmmm, O Humdum Suniyo Re, Dus Bahane, and more, Shaan recently appeared in an interview with Vickey Lalwani.

As per reports, Lalwani asked about why reality show singers are not able to make their place in the industry despite having so much talent, as shown in the episode. To this, Shaan said, “I am not just told but I am convinced and I know for a fact that they are re-dubbing the songs. Reality shows mein, last 2018 tak jab maine kiya tha, it was pretty much what it was (In reality shows — at least until 2018 when I was involved — what you heard was pretty much what it was).

Thoda usko tuning kardete the. Lekin ab toh puri tarah se gana re-dubb hota hai. Toh aap jab sunte ho (They used to tweak the tuning a bit. But now, the entire song is completely re-dubbed. So when you hear it), obviously, you’re blown away, like ‘Wow!’ Your expectations go sky-high.

But when you actually call them to sing something for you, you realise they’re a major disappointment.”

He further explained how the makers of these shows take the singing in the episode and edit it to make it sound better. Sometimes, the contestants are also made to sing the song again in a studio, where it is further edited and corrected.

He said, “Vahan jo gaate hain voh ek baari hi hota hai (What they sing there happens only once), but then they take that audio to the studio and make them sing again. This has been going on for a few years now. Then it’s also fixed, corrected.

So when an audience is listening, you level anything out which is out of tune. How’s that possible? Kuch hadh tak toh voh gaa rahe hain. Koi behtar gaa raha hai, koi kum behtar gaa raha hai, ussi par reactions aarahe hain

(To some extent, they are singing — some are singing better, some not as well — and that’s what’s getting the reactions). I had a few fallouts when these things were being forced initially.”

This is not the first time that Shaan has criticised music shows. In a 2022 interview with Zoom Digital, he said, “If we talk about music shows, one thing you cannot fake and that is your talent. Your singing will always be genuine.”

Some reality shows hire certain people to get TRPs, saying, “So this is one kind of vision and one way to make a show popular. But people enjoy these shows and then call it fake. The shows get TRPs which means people watch it. If people are enjoying it that means they are loving these fake things only. So, I don’t understand why they are pointing a finger at it then.”
