The film ‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’ might not be making many waves among the general audience, however, it has certainly not been appreciated by the Norwegian Ambassador to India Hans Jacob Frydenlund, who has claimed that the film is made up of “factual inaccuracies” and does not represent the country in a good way at all.

Of course, as representative to the country, it would make sense that he would oppose any media or content that puts it in a negative light, however, some other things have been revealed around this issue.

Apparently, Frydenlund was invited for a screening of the film, but afterward he ‘admonished’ two women from the film’s team was revealed by producer Nikkhil Advani.

What Happened?

‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’ is a film starring Rani Mukerji, Neena Gupta, Jim Sarbh and Anirban Bhattacharya and directed by Ashima Chibber, is based on the true story of Sagarika Chakaraborty’s book The Journey of a Mother where she battled the state of Norway after they took away custody of her kids over certain issues and said they would be wards of the state until they reached the age of 18.

Frydenlund posted a very unfavourable review of the film on 17th March, Friday on its release date and for this producer Nikkhil Advani revealed what happened at the screening that the Norwegian ambassador was invited to.

In his official statement, Advani wrote “Atithi Devo Bhava! is a cultural mandate in India. Every Indian is taught that by our elders. Last evening we hosted the Norwegian Ambassador and volunteered to show him our film Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway.

Post the screening, I sat quietly watching him admonish two strong women who have chosen to tell this very important story. I was quiet because just like Sagarika Chakraborty, they don’t need me to fight for them and ‘culturally’ we do not insult our guests. As far as a clarification is concerned. Video Attached.”

The video attached features the real Mrs. Chatterjee, Sagarika Chakraborty and she spoke about how the ambassador commented on her case ‘without having any decency’ to speak to her first and that the Norwegian government ‘continues to spread lies’ about her.

The Norwegian Ambassador to India has apparently not liked the very much, stating that “There has been a lot of attention towards the film, Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. The film is a work of fiction, even though it is based on an actual case. The case being referred to was resolved a decade ago in cooperation with Indian authorities and with the agreement of all parties involved.”

Frydenlund also added that certain things shown in the movie were not accurate and that “Children will never be taken away from their families based on cultural differences described. Eating with their hands or having children sleep in bed with their parents are not considered practices harmful to children and are not uncommon in Norway, irrespective of cultural background.”

He also wrote that “Child welfare is not driven by profit. The alleged claim that ‘the more children put into the foster system, the more money they make’ is completely false. Alternative care is a matter of responsibility and not a money-making entity. The reason for placing children in alternative care is if they are subject to neglect, violence or other forms of abuse.”

The ambassador shared the op-ed he wrote for The Indian Express commenting that “It (the film) incorrectly depicts Norway’s belief in family life and our respect for different cultures. Child welfare is a matter of great responsibility, never motivated by payments or profit. #Norwaycares.”
