Do You Know Why Life Would Be Miserable Without These Comfort Food Items?

-

By Drishya Subramaniam

We all have a certain set of comfort foods to which we turn to when we are sick, grieving or well quite happy!

Comfort food is referred to that food that has either a nostalgic or a sentimental value to its consumer. And, these foods usually have a higher calorie level or are high in carbohydrates, or have a high caffeine content.

Throwing such complicated definitions out of the window, in simpler terms it stands for food that makes you high!

Isn’t it surprising to think that food not only fills our stomach but at many times our hearts and souls as well! Some people have food as stress relievers others take it in during the depression and for some, it’s just to share their joys.

Some people have food as stress relievers others take it in during the depression and for some, it’s just to share their joys. These aren’t the only kind of comfort foods we deal with. There are a lot of goodies we inevitably have without realizing.

Have you noticed that every movie has to watched over a bucket of Popcorn for most people?

It’s not that we don’t get other snacks to munch on. What helped popcorn become the numero uno movie snack? It’s price!

Popcorn was so affordable that everyone could afford to have something to munch on while enjoying the movies since the Great Depression in America.

Now we probably can’t separate the two, without the smell and taste of it, we don’t feel like we are at the movies, talk about in-depth connections!

Besides people like me buy it just because I get cheese flavoured ones too, and those few added calories along with it.

A Carnival or Festival Fair is never complete without Cotton Candy

This spun sugar treat is something most of us end up having when at a fair or a carnival. Believe it or not, the fact that we all have a child in us is true. What other better reason do we have for having those overly sweet creepy colored hair thingies that get stuck to our teeth every time we visit the fair.

Why fairs? Probably because it’s inventors Morrison and Wharton first exhibited the invention it at St. Louis World’s Fair and since then it has become a loyal crowd magnate at fairs all around the world.

Hot coffee for Headaches!

Caffeine isn’t all that bad. So much can happen over coffee. the virtue of the coffee is probably heightened when it becomes the go-to remedy for a cold or a headache.

Who said that it’s the heat that helps the headache?

It can reduce inflammation and thus many a time all it takes is a coffee to say goodbye to your headache.

Dedicated to those coffee addicts who get a headache because next time you can just fake a headache and grab a cuppa. Though caffeine can take away and give a headache as well, but let’s keep that between us.

Dal Khichadi, the Savior when sick

Dal Kichadi may not be the in thing in town but it beats fast food chains like McDonald’s, but hands down beats anything when you’re sick!

Which parent hasn’t served this to their child? With almost no spices and all the nutrients cooked into one wholesome meal, a steaming plate of dal khichdi can make anyone feel comfy under layers of blankets on a bed and cure any disease.

For an all-time survivor on fast food like me, home food does take its toll! Wonder why dishes that barely have any taste turns into our comfort food when we are sick.

A Birthday without a Birthday Cake is Unforgivable!

All the varied theories about the origin of birthday cakes at Germany and Greece have been much read about. The word cake universally makes people’s mouths water. But why?

Besides the fact that it contains sweeteners to lighten up your mood etc, it doesn’t harm to have something sweet that can be shared within a community on a special occasion.

What a weird world we live in!

Cakes are served up only during the happiest of occasions so I guess just the sound of it reminds you of a very happy occasion.

Chocolates on any special occasion is as important as the occasion itself

Cocoa is apparently one of the bitterest to eat. Surprising then, how such a savory item made sweet has quintessentially been rated with a high comfort quotient. Maybe because chocolate “contains trytophan which causes the brain to make serotonin, high levels of which can produce feelings of elation, apart from the phenylethylamine, works by stimulating the brain’s pleasure centres and is believed to induce feelings of giddiness and excitement.”

Despite all the science behind it, I still I can’t comprehend the obsessive happiness this one gives to everyone. If you have the answers do let me know!

So, being a chocolate addict myself, I can never find a reason to refuse it. It definitely turns my happiness quotient up a few notches.

Be it a birthday, Valentine’s Day or a souvenir from places far away chocolates turn out to be the best comfort food to make my day and most of the others’ on the planet as well.

So, we all have our own personal comfort food that can make our day better than ever. E
ver wondered how unknowingly we tend to eat these goodies at particular occasions as if our forefathers had taught us that custom?

Well, we are grateful that they are at least always there to comfort us whenever we need them!
