There were some mixed reactions when the first generation of 1 Series hatches got sold. The good news is BMW has taken on people’s feedback when developing the new shape models.

- It looks better than the first-generation models
They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have to confess, though, that I was never a fan of the original 1 Series. Why? Because it just didn’t look nice enough for my tastes.
The new mk2 is a different story. It’s wider, bolder and meaner than the outgoing model.
- There’s an impressive engine lineup
You might think that the 1 Series only comes with one or two engine choices, but it doesn’t. In fact, there are over five different engine and gearbox combinations available.
Both the petrol and diesel units offer good power, fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.
- Anyone can afford to buy the 1 Series
The thing about BMW is that they are a premium vehicle manufacturer. That means you won’t find any “cheap and cheerful” cars sold by the German car maker.
One interesting fact about the 1 Series is that its price still makes it within reach of most budgets. There are some good leasing deals on offer at the moment. And it’s even possible to get bad credit car leasing for the 1 Series without paying lots of interest.

The 1 Series is the baby of the BMW range. One might assume that you’d only get “poverty-spec” trims with the 1 Series. But, you’d be wrong!
All BMW 1 Series trims come with a range of standard-fit features. Examples include air conditioning, start-stop technology and sat-nav.
- It handles like a champ
You might not realise it, but the BMW 1 Series is the ONLY rear-wheel drive hatchback in its class! As you can imagine, RWD in a hatchback makes for fun driving!
As one would expect, the new 1 Series offers superb handling on the road. It has an equal weight distribution across the car and provides enhanced suspension. It’s a worthy upgrade for existing E81, E82, E87, and E88 owners.
- It’s more comfortable than a mk7 VW Golf
Let’s make no mistake, the 1 Series isn’t a car that has a cavernous interior like the X5, for example. But, that doesn’t mean it isn’t comfortable to sit in for long periods.
In fact, in a recent road test against a Volkswagen Golf, the new 1 Series was more comfortable on long trips.
- It’s a practical hatchback
The cargo space in the second-generation is bigger than its predecessor. There is also an array of storage compartments in the car, making it a practical hatchback.
