Bill Gates, the billionaire philanthropist buys 25,000 acres of land in Arizona to build world’s first “Smart City”. Gates has made a generous investment of $80 million through his investment firm, Cascade Investments LLC to build the community, Belmont.
Belmont will feature stores, schools, homes, and more. With 80,000 residences, Belmont’s population will be similar to that of Tempe, Arizona with around 182,000 people.

The experiment will test the viability of similar cities in the future. The city will have embedded design blending high-speed internet, self-driving cars, and smarter manufacturing solutions.
According to UN’s estimates, 2.5 billion people will be living in cities by 2050. Thus, Gates’ firm hopes to perfect the flexible infrastructure model that could sustain future growth with limited resources. Clearly, there is an urgent need for these cities of the future or “Smarter Cities”.
Focus on Urban Planning is a top priority for Bill Gates. The Gates Foundation has been working to reduce global poverty and has provided affordable healthcare to millions. The foundation is also actively involved in education reform efforts.
