Los Angeles Fires

The Los Angeles fires that swept across the region in different places all at the same time have left just devastation, sadness, and unimaginable damage in their wake.

The fires started on 7th January 2025 affecting multiple places in Los Angeles County in the United States of America.

According to reports, the fires have resulted in the death of 10 people, damage to over 10,300 structures and made over 180,000 people evacuate their homes and the region in order to remain safe. The biggest areas affected include the Pacific Palisades in the Santa Monica Mountains region, Sylmar, and Altadena.

The fires are said to have been escalated by the Santa Ana winds. As per the National Weather Service, the winds that usually occur during fall and winter work to push dry air toward the coast going over the inland deserts of California and Southwest.

According to Daniel Swain, a University of California Los Angeles climatologist, reported by CBS News, it is also estimated that the Palisades Fires could be one of the costliest wildfires in history simply “because of the number of buildings that have been destroyed and as the structures rank among the nation’s most expensive homes”.

Real estate data firm ATTOM Data that the median home value of the 9,000 residential units in that area roughly comes to about $3.1 million.

Along with several structures like schools, churches, and restaurants, many celebrity homes in that area have also been destroyed. Not just that, but many iconic structures and places have been destroyed in the fires, some of these places were almost a hundred years old.

Here we take a look at some of the before and after images in order to witness the extent of the destruction that the fires caused.

The Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire near Pasadena collectively destroyed about 34,000 acres (13,750 hectares) of land. This has made this one of the most destructive wildfires in the history of Los Angeles.

AccuWeather has also estimated that the loss from all these different fires could range between $135 billion and $150 billion.

Robert Luna, the Sheriff of Los Angeles County said “It looks like an atomic bomb dropped in these areas. I don’t expect good news, and we’re not looking forward to those numbers.”

Alexandra Datig, a local resident, was quoted by Fox News saying how “It is like driving through hell itself down here, literally through hell,” and that “This is madness down here.”

President Joe Biden has also declared a major disaster in California and that the region will be given full support for the next 180 days including “reimbursement for debris removal, temporary shelters, and emergency response costs.”
