The Met Gala was just a few days ago, and it seems that already everyone is exhausted with it. This is when something called the ‘Pet Gala’ comes to take its rightful place as the thing to capture our attention, without being problematic, indecent, or just another headache in our social media feeds.
The Met Gala 2026 was riddled with controversy, from Jeff Bezos’s association with the event to protests against it, especially given the inhumane conditions in which Amazon workers work.
A lot also took issue with the throwing of wealth in our faces, especially considering the recent world events, where people are finding it difficult to meet even their basic needs, while others are literally fighting for their lives.
However, the Pet Gala, an event inspired by the Met Gala, instead of rich celebrities flashing their million-dollar diamonds, featured adorable cats and dogs walking a miniature red carpet, wearing cute costumes and accessories.
What Is The Pet Gala?
A Pet Gala held just a few days ago went viral when the Instagram account of Mochi The Doxie, a mini dachshund, posted a video on May 5, 2026, with the caption “Forget the Met Gala, the place to be is the Pet Gala!”

The event in question is called ‘The Pet Gala 2026’ and was organised by NYU Faculty Housing Happenings. It’s held annually, and this year was on the same day as the actual Met Gala, on May 4, 2026.
The event had a little red carpet for the pets to walk on, pet caricatures, pup cups and professional photography by NYC Pet Pawtographer (Carmen González).
The video soon went viral, with users commenting how this was “So much better than the Met Gala! 10 out of 10! Would love an invitation for next year!”
Another wrote, “What is the date of the 2027 Pet Gala… This is something I could really get into… I’ll have to know the theme.” A third commented, “Oh yea I’m wearing Alexander Miawqueen” // “is that Miaw Miaw runway collection?” // “omg your Gipawnchy dress so stunning”.
The virality of the clip came from the absolutely adorable sights of a wide range of pets from cats and dogs to turtles and snakes, even, wearing extravagant outfits, tuxedos, hats and even pearl accessories and jewels, making them a million bucks on their own.
The video captioned it as “New York’s most fashionable dogs attended the Pet Gala.”
One dog caught the attention of many after they realised that the outfit was inspired by Maison Margiela and Zendaya’s look, with one user calling it “iconic.”

There is another Pet Gala, called “Pet Fashion’s Biggest Night,” organised by internationally acclaimed pet couturier Anthony Rubio, that features pets wearing elaborate recreations of iconic outfits worn by celebrities at the Met Gala.
This particular year, it will be held later in the month, with ticket proceeds going to the AKC Museum of the Dog, which helps preserve the history and art of canine companions.
Each outfit worn by the animals is handcrafted by Anthony Rubio, an animal advocate and FIT-educated designer.
New York is not the only city to have its Pet Galas, with cities closer home like Delhi and Chennai hosting their own versions centred around general pet shows, adoption zones, and breed championships.
