There are just some people in our world that get into controversy no matter what they do. One of those would certainly be Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who has once again enraged people with the trailer of her new Netflix show dropping.
Markle, once just an average American actress exploded on the global landscape after her relationship with Prince Harry became public. This was followed by, of course, the whole big fat royal wedding and all the shenanigans it brought, along with also many people being divided over Markle with either some loving her with a ferocious loyalty or absolutely detesting her.
The trailer to her new Netflix show which is a comeback of sorts to the public eye has once again shown that, with many comments roasting and trolling it, claiming that it is “entitled” and “tone deaf.”
Why Are People Hating On Meghan Markle’s Upcoming Show?
Meghan Markle, ended an almost five-year-long hiatus from social media to announce a new Netflix series called “With Love, Meghan,” premiering on 15th January.
According to reports the “series promises a glamorous mix of culinary adventures, celebrity appearances, and sun-soaked glimpses into the Duchess of Sussex’s life in the upscale town of Montecito, California.”
The 1-minute and 40-second long trailer working in her garden, cooking up treats in the kitchen, baking a cake, arranging flowers, with guest cameos like Prince Harry, Mindy Kaling, and more and saying things like “I’ve always loved taking something pretty ordinary and elevating it.”
It is a pretty standard trailer for the kind of genre it targets and the content it’s about, specifically rich women doing rich women things.
This is also supposedly the last project in the Duke and Duchessess’ $160 million deal with Netflix which didn’t see many hits except for the 2022 documentary Harry & Meghan.
However, despite how it seems to be just a generic little show, of which there are already a plethora of them on practically every streaming site, created by several public personalities, it seems this particular show has triggered some people.

According to News.com.au, an Australian media site, on 4th January the trailer on YouTube had “7,500 thumbs ups and 48,000 thumbs downs.”
A lot of people in the comments and posts online also claim that the series is “terrible” and “privileged.” One user wrote “Uh no thanks,” another comment that “This looks terrible” while a third added, “Rather watch paint dry.”
Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Republican senator John McCain, also criticised the trailer said “There have been two terror attacks in two days, major wars raging and Americans can’t pay for groceries. We are a country in rage, uncertainty and intensity right now… This is why the world doesn’t like you, nothing else. Just completely and utterly tone deaf to the moment.”
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams is also among those who didn’t like the trailer and was quoted by Daily Mail saying that the trailer looked to be “an exercise in celebrity at its most superficial” and how “It’s clearly all about ‘me, me, me.’”
A user on X/Twitter also wrote “Who is the target audience?? Women with tons of money and time on their hands making extremely fussy treats and crafts? Incredibly entitled.”
One social media user wrote “I’m sorry, but there are content creators on IG that are far more compelling and deserving of this show/opportunity.”
Another commented “I think I got norovirus from her food just by watching the trailer. Has anyone in the Production Company thought to have her hair pulled back, so she doesn’t keep touching it and contaminating the food? Also, it appears her recipes are plagiarized. Does she claim them as her own (her authentic ideas) in the Series or does she give credit to the very original creators?”
Shana MacDonald, the O’Donovan Chair in Communication at the University of Waterloo, speaking with CBC News said: “It’s very hard to admit a racialised woman into that space, and there’s no reason why Meghan Markle shouldn’t be showing what her luxurious lifestyle looks like and what brings her joy.”
She added “There’s a million millionaires out there. Why aren’t people going after people who are actually hurting society with their wealth as opposed to someone just like, ‘I’m going to bake a cake with flowers’?”
MacDonald who researches feminist, queer, and anti-racist social and digital media, however, also understands the hate, especially given the current socio-political situation, growing class struggle, and resentment against the rich and wealthy.
Commenting on the show MacDonald said, “It’s a kind of wrong time, wrong place moment because there is such a large conversation around class and income disparity emerging online right now.”
