Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in people.
You know, every morning, I make a promise. It’s not a grand, life-changing promise (read: lie) like “I will save the world from climate change” or “I’ll finally organise my cupboard” (ha!). No, it’s something far more simple. I tell myself, “Five more minutes, yaar.”
This sweet, innocent little lie is how my day of disaster begins.
It starts with my trusty phone alarm, screaming at 7 a.m. Like an expertly trained ninja, my hand reaches out to hit the snooze button without even opening my eyes, and I murmur to myself, “Five more minutes”.
The five minutes go by… which means half an hour. At this point, I’ve entered a parallel universe where time has no meaning.
But then, disaster strikes. My eyes dart open, it’s 8:00 a.m. and panic mode is ON.
My brain now kicks into full Desi Mom mode. “Get up! You’ll be late for college! Why are you so lazy?” I leap out of bed, doing stunts that would make Tiger Shroff proud, trying to get ready in record time.
Another part of this tragic lie is binge-watching.
We all know how this starts. It’s 10 p.m., you’ve finished your dinner, and you open Netflix. “I’ll just watch one episode,” you think. I mean, no one watches just one episode of FRIENDS. That’s not how binge-watching works.
One episode turns into two. Two turns into five. And suddenly, you’ve watched an entire season. When you even think about sleeping, it’s already 3 a.m.
Of course, all this circles back to the crown jewel of lies: procrastination.

You know how it goes. There’s a deadline looming over your head. But instead of doing anything about it, I think, “Let me just take a break for five minutes. I’ll start right after.”
So, I scroll through Instagram and watch cute cat videos because nothing screams productivity like kittens doing cute things. And those five minutes? Yeah, they morph into an hour, easily. Before I know it, it’s 11:00 p.m. and I’ve done NOTHING. Zilch.
What’s worse? I’m convincing myself that I work better under pressure! The sheer delusion. But honestly, at this point, it’s the only thing holding me together.
It all started with one harmless little lie – “Five more minutes”. Five minutes that have now led me to a lifestyle that’s equal parts chaos and self-inflicted panic.
I keep telling myself that I’ll change. Tomorrow, I’ll wake up on time and stop at just one episode.
And you know what? Maybe tomorrow, that five minutes won’t be a lie.
But until then, excuse me while I take a five-minute nap… or maybe 30. Who’s counting?
