4 Must Read Hindi Novels

-

Hindi novels have now become the endemic species in the world of literature. Neither are they seen in the bookstores, nor are they available in the libraries nowadays. India is a country with a rich culture and Hindi is an integral part of it. Being Indians we should never ignore it. But the present scenario is entirely different. Today readers prefer English novels over the Hindi ones. But I must tell you that Hindi novels are not inferior to the English Novels in any way. Great works have been written in Hindi and are translated to various languages. Hindi literature has seen various perspectives of a large number of writers in the previous centuries. Be it Kabirdas or Munshi Premchand, Hindi literature is an unexplored pool of immense talent. Hence the four Hindi novels everyone should read are as follows:

1. Gunahon Ka Devta by Dharamveer Bharati:

Written by Dharamveer Bharati, this legendary novel is the love story of a Devta, Chander and a girl Sudha. Their love story faces the turmoil of the society they lived in. The trappings of their love in the urban middle class, pre-independence India and mental conflicts of an enthusiastic, ambitious but idealistic youth are brilliantly portrayed in this love saga. The portrayal of the characters is beautiful; particularly the female protagonist of novel, Sudha touches the heart. Chander loved Sudha very much but his one decision led Sudha to the path of misery. The novel derives its name from a crime (Gunaah) done by the Devta, Chander.

2. Godaan by Munshi Premchand:

This epic novel is considered to be one of the best novels in the Hindi Literature. Written by the legendary Hindi writer, Munshi Premchand, this novel showcases the struggles f the people living in the rural India. This story is about the different sections of the society that prevailed together in the backward areas of the country. The peasant and rural society is represented by the family of Hori Mahato and his family members which includes Dhania, Rupa and Sona (daughters), Gobar (son), Jhunia (daughter-in-law). The Story starts from a point where Hori has a deep desire of having a cow as other millions of poor peasants. The story revolves around his struggles for buying and grazing the cow in spite of all the obstacles.

3. Pachpan Khambhe Lal Diware by Usha Priyamvada:

It is Usha Priyamvada’s first novel. This novel tells the heart-piercing story of an Indian girl who is the sole earner in her family. Her own family is sticking to her like parasites, never trying to understand her. This novel was one of the breakthroughs for the Indian societies for attempting to make others understand the hardships a woman faces in her life. It takes you through the life of a person who becomes very close to your heart by the end of the book.

4. Tamas by Bhishma Sahni:

Partially based on true events that Sahni himself witnessed in the communal riots during India’s Partition in 1947, the novel follows the life of people from both communities – Hindu and Muslim, and from various classes and backgrounds, as tensions in cities build up. Like most Partition fiction, Tamas (meaning Darkness) too identifies the complex nature humanity and inhumanity that drives people to massacre each other. This novel is one of the best contributions of Bhishan Sahni to the world of Hindi Literature.

These books changed the way Hindi literature was perceived and was able to grab the attention of international readers all around the world to the magical world of Hindi Literature. I would recommend all of you to give these books a read if you want to get a true gist of the lives of our older generations.
