Marriage till date holds a pretty important position in our society, with many thinking that it is the biggest thing to happen in one’s life.

For women especially, it is still considered the be-all and end-all of their lives with nothing as important as getting married and raising kids.

Many women, not just in India but across the world, are raised with the belief that the single purpose of their life is to get married, and all other events are just a step towards that itself.

So when such kind of mentality still exists in 2020, with all its education and modernisation, it should surprise no one that things were much worse back in the day, say around the 50s or so.

A magazine article from 1958 which is going viral is a testament to this craze around women needing a husband.

Why Is This 1958 Article Going Viral In 2020?

One cannot exactly trace who first posted about this particular article. There is a Facebook post by Kim Marx-Kuczynski that has more than 17,000 shares and almost 5,000 comments.

Apparently, the list is from an American magazine called McCall’s that is not in print any longer.

Journalist Jane Lavender recently shared it on her Twitter, making it go viral once more with people finding it either shocking or a big joke regarding some of the tips given in the list.

McCall’s was actually a very popular women’s magazine in America that at one time enjoyed a whopping 8.4 million readers during the 1960s.

McCall’s also boasted some pretty big names as its authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Kurt Vonnegut, Alice Adams, Tony J. Caridi, John Steinbeck, and many more.

The massive 129 points list is divided into ‘Where To Find Him’, ‘How To Let Him Know You’re There’, ‘How To Look Good To Him’ and finally ‘How To Land Him’. There is also a section called ‘Wild Ideas- Anything Goes’.

Some of the tips include to ‘rent a billboard and post your photo and phone number‘.

There are also some hilarious ones like,

  • ‘Learn to paint. Set up easel outside engineering school’,
  • ‘If he’s a fisherman, learn to scale and clean fish’,
  • ‘Be friendly to ugly men – handsome is as handsome does’,
  • ‘Get lost at football games’,
  • ‘Talk to his father about business and agree taxes are too high’

and many more.

Many people commented that this list could be a good prompt for a rom-com film just like ‘How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days’.
