Virat Kohli may not have been pushed, but he sure did jump. What are people saying about it?

Dressing Room

On Saturday, Virat Kohli stepped down from the position of Test captaincy. But a news report claimed that he had already made up his mind at least 24 hours prior.

“I ask a small favour, please don’t share with anybody outside the dressing room”, Virat Kohli said in a team meeting just after going down 1-2 in Cape Town against South Africa.

BCCI And The Others

If the BCCI sources are legitimate, there was no pressure from the brass up top. It was Virat’s decision alone. The BCCI had no inclination to stop him as well, but however, Kohli had informed the people up top that he was tired before his official statement.

The acceptance of his resignation came in the form of the BCCI’s Secretary Jay Shah’s tweet where he congratulated Virat Kohli on this decision he made.

Kohli-Ganguly squabble may be a reason…

Virat Kohli had burnt his bridges in the series defeat and the lack of runs. Therefore, he was backed into a corner with no support from inside and outside the team. This came after his squabble regarding the ODI and T20 captaincy, where, along with his decision to quit T20 captaincy, he was fired from the ODI format captaincy.

In the same meeting, Ganguly had said that he had requested Kohli to stay back as captain, which was insinuated as a lie without taking names from Kohli’s end.

What Else?

He was respected very much as a batsman, but during the manic consistency of the 2017-2019 era, there was the carte blanche as far as team-building was concerned under Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli.

There were whispers of “lack of communication”, players who did not feel “secure enough”, and those who were struggling for form weren’t given “an arm of assurance”. Virat Kohli as a batsman was highly lauded, but as a captain, he was aloof and on a “lonely planet”.

Was Kohli’s going justified?

Jasprit Bumrah’s one-liner about development under Virat Kohli said a lot, “A bowler’s development also depends on his own hard work”

In the end, Kohli seemed to be jaded and tired and he had his back against a wall at the expense of his stellar performance.
