As the release dates of two highly anticipated movies, Barbie and Oppenheimer, near, these star-studded productions have suddenly formed a unique double feature – ‘Barbenheimer’.

The release of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ in theatres on Friday marks the end of a year-long online frenzy that linked the two films despite their glaring contrasts.

What Is The Trend “Barbenheimer”

The name “Barbenheimer” is a combination of the two films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, both of which will be released in theaters on July 21. Cinephiles coined this word to express their affection for both films despite their stark disparities.

While Barbie is a sweetly subversive comedy starring Margot Robbie as the beloved doll, Oppenheimer is a thought-provoking three-hour drama centered on the development of the atomic bomb, starring Cillian Murphy.

This conversation about “Barbenheimer” has elicited responses from the casts of both films. While Christopher Nolan called it “terrific,” Margot Robbie called it a “perfect double bill.”

The dramatic disparities between these films have also fueled an increase in the number of people joining this trend. People all around the internet have made their own interpretations of the trend. Some of them are below.

Barbie VS Oppenheimer

According to American Multi-Cinema, 40,000 of its movie club members have already purchased tickets to see both Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day.

Greta Gerwig’s visually stunning Barbie has the potential to produce around $100 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada by the end of the weekend, according to industry observers.

On the other hand, domestic ticket sales for Christopher Nolan’s weighty and thought-provoking Oppenheimer, which cost a minimum of $100 million before marketing costs, are expected to be around $50 million during the same month.

About The Two Films

Gerwig’s two-hour-long Barbie will explore the existential issues of Mattel-inspired fashion dolls in an elaborate utopian environment. In contrast, Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a three-hour biopic based on American Prometheus, a 2005 biography of the physicist.

Both are ready to compete when they hit theaters this Friday. Though industry observers have given Robbie’s Barbie the edge, the true decision will come when the films eventually hit theaters, breaking many people’s anticipation.
