It seems that all the globe-trotting by PM Modi is finally bringing India into the international eye, starting with The Daily Show.

The Daily Show by Trevor Noah, is a news satire program, and often talks about current events, politics, global policies and more international news in a funny and humorous way.

In the show, they have segments like any typical news show, where they talk about what all is happening around the world, just in a more joking manner with the host Trevor Noah, taking the case of how absurd some of them might be.

But recently, on Monday, 12th November 2018, Trevor Noah in one of the segments spoke about the Statue of Unity, specifically making fun of the extremely high price of almost Rs. 2,989 crores ($400 million) that it took to make the entire thing.

This was the clip, the part about the Statue of Unity comes in at about 2.28 time-stamp:

What Trevor Noah Said?

Apparently, he talked about the Statue of Unity built in memory of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and how it was bizarre to spend so much money on a statue.

The Statue of Unity was unveiled on 31st October, 2018, in a grand ceremony on the 143rd birth anniversary of the ‘Iron Man of India’ aka Sardar Patel.

Standing at an impressive 597 feet, the statue of the freedom icon is almost double the size of US’ Statue of Liberty that is only 93 meters in height.

The unveiling officially made the Statue of Unity, the tallest statue in the entire world.

Noah for his part, took a dig at the price and then commented that it would have been better if the statue was made of Gandhi instead of Sardar Patel, considering the former was skinnier than the latter.

Noah said that,

400 million dollars for a statue. You realise for that amount of money you could fly the caravan back from Sweden first class and then pay them to put up barbed wire to block themselves.

What are you doing, India?

And here’s the thing, I’m not saying India shouldn’t build statues, but why not build one of, like, Gandhi, right?

He’s also famous, and he was much skinnier, okay? Yeah. They could have saved on materials. Same height, half the cost.

India Needs To Be More Careful Now

A lot of Indians took offence to Noah’s jokes and lashed out on Twitter and other social media.

But according to me, this could be a wake-up call especially to our government and other officials to be a bit more careful of their actions.

Because this segment by The Daily Show, clearly proves that they know and are looking at India.

With PM Modi’s frequent travels, he has definitely worked hard to bring India into the global spotlight, people from around the world are now looking at the country and watching what all it does.

So in a way, this could be a good thing as it could make the authorities a bit more cautious of their actions and what kind of image is the international arena getting of India.

What do you all think, was the joke on the Statue of Unity good or bad?
