The Super Exciting, Defining Moments Of The IPL Final 2016

-

I really don’t like finals. The buildup to the game usually increases my expectations which fall flat if the game turns out to be drab and boring.

But I was so glad that I had watched this one final. Here are the moments which stood out in the game:

  1. Dave’s the Man!

Well, David Warner has had a blast in this IPL. True, Virat Kohli stole the show but Warner was Sunrisers’ go-to man in almost each match. The fact that he amassed over 800 runs – which has never been done in previous editions of the IPL – is commendable in itself.

Yesterday, he got off his team to a rollicking start! At a point, when they were pumping runs at 10 per over, a target of 200 looked really achievable.

  1. RCB staged a mini-comeback:

All the target predictions took a blow with Warner’s dismissal. And given the reliance of the team on his batting prowess, the achievable target took such a tumble that around 180 seems okay.

Here the credit goes to the RCB bowlers for keeping a tight line and length in the middle overs, rarely losing their calm and taking wickets at regular intervals.

  1. Sunrisers’ batsmen finally play a good innings:

Without David Warner, their batsmen have usually looked like a team of ducklings without their mother. But yesterday night, 2 batsmen came into their own.

Yuvraj Singh has had a really on-off season, showing so much promise but never getting to a big score. But still he kept the scoreboard ticking even as wickets fell at the other end. Commendable!

But Cutting really stole the show for me. Even till the 17th over, I doubted they would cross 190. And then came Cutting. A 15-ball 39 including a six which went 117m! Wow!

  1. Shane Watson had an off day:

4 overs. 61 runs given. No wicket taken. You do not usually associate these numbers with Shane Watson. He had a brilliant run till now, but yesterday it all fell apart for him.

  1. The RCB openers come to the party:

208 was the target. One would usually think that the game was one sided by then. And then I saw Gayle and Kohli’s masterclass and I felt, “Why did I even doubt them?” By the time both of them got out, RCB had made 140 in 12.5 overs.

It was anyone’s game then.

  1. Sunrisers show why their bowling attack is the best:

But after the 13th over, things slowed down for RCB. They still kept the scoreboard ticking, but the bowlers also kept taking wickets at regular intervals to stem the flow of runs.

The last 4 overs were bowled by Mustafizur Rehman and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, masters of death bowling. And they lived up to their name. Except for a few wild strokes of the bat, RCB couldn’t get anything working for them there onwards.

And then the match ended. And it felt as if I could breathe again.

I know it won’t be long before I crave for more sporting action, but I think the final will stay in my memory for a few days to come.
