The Supreme Court announced the addition of nine gender-neutral loos in the court premises on April 12, 2023. Furthermore, the online appearance portal for advocates is not gender-neutral too.

The Reason Behind The Changes

The initiative to add gender-neutral restrooms to the court premises was approved by the Chief Justice of India, Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud. The initiative was primarily undertaken to ensure the inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community by revisiting the organisational and spatial structure of the court.

The Supreme Court has set the precedent for the other courts to follow.

The Committee

Senior advocate and gay rights litigator, Menaka Guruswamy, is one of the members of the Gender Sensitization and Internal Complaints Committee of the Supreme Court. There are 10 other members besides her.

Rohin Bhatt, a 24-year-old non-binary queer rights activist, put forth a proposal to broaden the horizon of the said committee to ‘Gender and Sexuality Sensitization and Internal Complaints Committee.’ The proposal is under active consideration.
