It seems that many people frustrated with the lockdown and lack of jobs are turning towards crime and such activities to get by.

Recently news came out that a SpiceJet pilot who was driving from Faridabad towards Delhi airport was robbed by around 10 people near the IIT flyover.

This is not the first time such a robbery has happened especially after the lockdown instilled in India due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In fact, just a few days after the countrywide lockdown was announced, something similar happened then too. A man was robbed at gunpoint near Chittaranjan Park in Delhi off his quite expensive camera.

Now another incident has come to light where a person has been looted by unidentified people who took advantage of the lack of traffic and mandatory mask usage.

What Happened?

Yuvraj Singh Tewatia, a SpiceJet pilot was going to the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) from his house in Faridabad in a company cab at around 1 am on Wednesday.

The pilot was en route to work a Delhi-Mumbai flight supposed to take off at 3 am when the incident happened.

While he was at IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) flyover in South Delhi, he was stopped by around 4-5 two-wheelers that were carrying around 8-10 people.

They forcibly stopped his car, a Maruti Swift, broke the windows with bats and rods and one person even injured the pilot with a knife.

The official police complaint as per reports has revealed that the men then hit the pilot on the head with the pistol one of them was carrying, snatched his belongings and robbed him of ₹34,000 that the man had on him.

They left him bleeding inside his car with the windows smashed. Fortunately, the 30-year old pilot managed to call the police once the men left.

As per a personal account being shared, he was not the only victim of the night, in fact, 2-3 other cars also suffered through the same fate.

However, reports say that Delhi Police spokesperson MS Randhawa has only admitted to getting one complaint about this which they are investigating.

An acquaintance shared a personal message from the victim himself on WhatsApp recounting what happened to him:

“So, today at 0100 hrs, I was in my company cab, seated behind the driver travelling from Faridabad to Airport. On the IIT Delhi Flyover, 4-5 2-wheelers with 8-10 people blocked the road. They soon broke all the windows of the car with rods and baseball bats and stormed inside.

One guy pointed a country made pistol at me from the left side & one guy poked me with a knife on my thigh. I was over overpowered so I gave up, they demanded money, I gave them the wallet. They hit the car with the rods again. Luckily I just survived a little knife wound on my thigh (5-6 stitches).

We drove 100m ahead to the IIT DEL gate and stopped and called 100. By the time the PCRs came we were 4 Cars and 3 2 wheelers with the same story, they kept coming and going us. All in 10 mins and they vanished.

Police says, it’s because of lockdown, the local goons have gone out of cash, they’re on the streets and they fear no one.

This message is to inform everyone to stay safe, avoid the travel at night and in secluded roads. Joblessness, and Masks to hide the identity is arming the goons to take in innocent vulnerable people, if this could happen on a well-lit flyover in a posh area in front of IIT Delhi. It can happen to anyone. So beware!

From Yuvraj Tewatia (Captain in Spice Jet) attacked on IIT flyover coming from Faridabad (gave away 34000 cash).”

Many people have commented on how safe the roads are considering that roads are pretty much empty these days.

These empty roads seem to have made some people extra brave and allowed them to think they can get away with anything.

This could be quite terrifying for people who are engaged in essential services and have to step out of their house in order to do their work.
