Rapper Shubhneet Singh, also known as Shubh is embroiled in another controversy now regarding a hoodie.

Apparently, clips were going viral where he is said to be holding a hoodie with an illustration on it that is mocking the assassination of India’s former Prime Minister, India Gandhi that happened in 1984.

What Happened?

This incident happened with Punjabi-Canadian rapper Shubh on October 29 2023 while he was doing a live performance in London.

Soon though, videos started circulating of Shubh displaying a hoodie while on stage that sported a controversial artwork specifically related to the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The clip was reportedly shared by @SherePanjabUK, pro-Khalistani social media page with the caption “Punjabi Artist Shubh holding a hoodie of an illustration that shows Indian PM Indira Gandhi (aka maimuna begum) being greeted by Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh and Shaheed Bhai Beant Singh #NeverForget84.”

The hoodie seen in the clip was created by Akaal Clothing, a pro-Khalistani clothing line and they also shared the video on their Instagram.

Fact check reports from Op India and DNA India have both stated that it seems the artist was handed the hoodie by someone from the audience and believe it was an attempt by the clothing brand to promote their new line of hoodies.

The reports were also unable to verify if the image on the hoodie that Shubh was holding up was really the controversial one or another one depicting the Punjab map with the districts outlined.

Reports indicate that while the image on the hoodie seemed similar to the other illustration showing Indira Gandhi’s assassination, it was perhaps not the same.

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut also jumped on the bandwagon and posted on X/Twitter “Celebrating the cowardly killing of an old woman by those who she appointed as her saviours. When you are trusted to protect but you take advantage of the trust and faith and use the same weapons to kill the ones were suppose to protect then it’s a shameful act of cowardice not of bravery. One must be ashamed of such a cowardly attack on an elderly lady who was disarmed and unaware, a lady who was the chosen leader of a democracy, nothing to glorify here Shubham ji. Shame !!!”

Not The First Time

This is not the first time that Shubh has come under controversy as it was just last month that he was being cancelled on a massive scale for sharing an artwork on his Instagram that some believe was support for Khalistan.

Although it wasn’t verifiably proven if the art was supporting Khalistan, but the wave of cancellation had several big personalities like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, and more unfollowing him and even his India tour being cancelled.

Shubh even issued a statement after his tour was cancelled, explaining what happened. Posting on his Instagram soon after he wrote “As a young rapper-singer hailing from Punjab, India, it was my life’s dream to put my music on an international dais.

But the recent happenings have tumbled my hard work and progress, and I wanted to say a few words to express my dismay and sorrow. I’m extremely disheartened by the cancellation of my tour in India.

I was highly amped up and enthusiastic to perform in my country, in front of my people. The preparations were in full swing and I was practicing with my heart and soul for the last two months. And I was very excited, happy, and ready to perform. But I guess destiny had some other plans.”

He then added “India is my country too. I was born here. It is the land of my Gurus and my Ancestors, who didn’t even blink an eye to make sacrifices for the freedom of this land, for its glory, and for the family. And Punjab is my soul, Punjab is in my blood.

Whatever I am today, I am because of being a Punjabi. Punjabis do not need to give proof of patriotism. At every turn in history, Punjabis have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of this country. That’s why it’s my humble request to refrain from naming every Punjabi as a separatist or anti-national.”

Finally, he explained what that post was really meant for “My intent in resharing that post on my story was only to Pray for Punjab as there were reports of electricity and internet shutdowns throughout the state.

There was no other thought behind it and I definitely didn’t intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments. The accusations against me have deeply affected me.

But as my guru has taught me ‘Manas Ki Jaat Sabai Ekai Pachanbo (All the human beings recognized as one and same)’ and taught me not to be afraid, not to be intimidated which is the origin of Punjabiyat.

I will continue to work hard. My team and I will be back soon, bigger and stronger together. Waheguru Mehar Kare Sarbat Da Bhala (folded hands and red heart emojis).”
