In a significant move, Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaarul Haq Kakar, announced a ban on New Year celebrations in the country.

This decision, he stated, was made to express solidarity with the people of Gaza who have been enduring a grave humanitarian crisis. The ban is a reflection of Pakistan’s deep concern over the ongoing violence in Palestine and an attempt to draw attention to the plight of the Palestinians.

Solidarity with Gaza

Prime Minister Kakar emphasized the need for the nation to stand united in support of the Palestinians.

He cited the alarming statistics of casualties, stating that over 21,000 Palestinians, including around 9,000 children, have lost their lives since the Israeli bombardment began on October 7. He condemned the Israeli forces for what he described as “crossing all limits of violence and injustice.”

Government Actions

Highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to aiding Palestine, Mr. Kakar mentioned that two aid packages have already been dispatched, and a third is in preparation. Additionally, the government is actively engaged in discussions with Jordan and Egypt to ensure timely assistance and the evacuation of the injured from Gaza.

Pakistan’s efforts to raise awareness about the Palestinian cause on the global stage were underscored, with the prime minister pledging to continue these efforts to halt the Israeli bloodshed.

Tradition and Islamic Influence

The decision to ban New Year celebrations is noteworthy, given that Pakistan’s New Year festivities are traditionally modest.

The influence of Islamic groups, who discourage and sometimes forcefully oppose such celebrations, has played a role in shaping this tradition.

The ban, in this context, reflects a broader sentiment of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, aligning with the principles and values upheld by Islamic groups in the country.

Pakistan’s decision to forgo New Year celebrations in solidarity with Palestine marks a poignant gesture. Prime Minister Kakar’s address underscores the gravity of the situation in Gaza and the government’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people.

As the international community continues to grapple with the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Pakistan’s stance serves as a reminder of the global impact of regional conflicts and the interconnectedness of nations in addressing humanitarian crises.
