Job rejection reasons can go from the normal ones like lack of experience or qualifications or sometimes even a little bizarre. However, seldom has one seen oneself getting rejected by a company because they are ‘too fair’.

Certainly, there have been cases against minorities where companies do reject candidates because of race, religion, gender, and yes even colour, which is usually on the other side.

It is quite difficult to believe that one would actually get rejected for being too fair and that too the company outright telling the candidate that.

This seems to be the claim of a Bengaluru woman who in a LinkedIn post shared how she was rejected in the final round for a job just because her skin tone was ‘too fair’.

What Did The Woman Say?

The woman going by the name Pratiksha Jichkar, supposedly a branding consultor among other things, posted this on her LinkedIn page, 2 days ago:

“I was rejected in final round of interview, as my skin tone was little fair for the team.

You read that right, after 3 rounds of interview, 1 round of assignment, with all the relevant skills, qualifications and experience I was not fit for the role because my skin tone was fair than the current team.

The hiring manager wished to have no differences in the team and so I wasn’t offered the role. (how empathetic😓)

I wasn’t just stunned, shocked but felt really worst about what kind of world are we heading too.

Here we are talking about diversity, inclusivity, sustainability and then we are judging people based on color, creed, religion and many other biases.

In the world where we are promoting skill based opportunities, boosting immense learning potential through AI, creating extraordinary technologies and then not hiring folks because we are still the same society who hold grudges and biases.

I wish I could name them and call out, but if you are reading this it’s an opportunity for you to rectify your culture and be open to people with talent, skills and potential.

Great organisations are not built by great leaders but by employees who thrive with great values, culture, respect and potential to scale new heights irrespective of biases, politics and competition.”

The company as per the screenshot shared in the post said that “Thank you for interviewing with us and being patient throughout the process. Unfortunately, we cannot move ahead with you for the role at this time.

We found your profile relevant and all skills and qualifications match what we are looking for but we are an inclusive organisation and believe in equal opportunity for all. Your skin tone is little fair for the current team so we don’t want differences in our internal team, and we decided not to offer you.”

A Fake Post?

However, people seemed to be skeptical of the claims being made in the post and how this could never be just a fake post done for clout.

One user on Reddit wrote that “There is no way, no way, a HR would like write this. I understand diversity hirings sometimes end up being unfair to some, but that wording is never gonna be put in official mail by any half competent HR lol. This is a rage bait.”

Another replied to this with “Definitely fake. HRs don’t give reasons for rejection on the face/phone and will send on the email and that too like this. Not a chance.”

Several others agreed with this being too strange to be actually true with users writing “Saw this on LinkedIn today. This was just a publicity stunt. It ain’t real,” or “This can’t be true. Even if the reality is this, no company would mention this in rejection mail.”

Some people also raised questions about the credibility of the post after Jichkar turned off comments on her post.
