These leaked documents suggest Russia launched a secret multi-agency effort to interfere in the US democracy.
The report – “No 32-04 \ vd” – is classified as secret. It says Trump is the “most promising candidate” from the Kremlin’s point of view. The Russian translation for it is “perspektivny”.
They went on to define his psychology as “impulsive, mentally unstable and unbalanced individual who suffers from an inferiority complex”. Furthermore, there is confirmation about “kompromat” or compromising material from the Kremlin about the then-future President Donald Trump.
This material was collected over “non-official visits to Russian Federation” and points towards certain events that happened during Trump’s trips to Moscow.
There is little doubt that running interference was during the 2016 Kremlin Summit. The official photo of the occasion shows Putin at the head of the table, seated beneath a Russian Federation flag and a two-headed golden eagle.
Russia’s then prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev, attended, together with the veteran Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, Sergei Shoigu, the Defence Minister in charge of the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency; Mikhail Fradkov, the then chief of Russia’s SVR Foreign Intelligence Service; and Alexander Bortnikov, the boss of the FSB spy agency.
Nikolai Patrushev, the FSB’s former director, attended as security council secretary.
The press release showed that the talks were about the economy and Moldova. However, in light of the document that was leaked, there might have been a covert mission that they had to strategise.
It was mostly the president and his intelligence officials who appear to have signed off on a multi-agency plan to interfere in US democracy, framed in terms of justified self-defence.
The paper laid out several key points of interest such as the widening gulf between right and left, US media-information space and an anti-Obama stance of the nation. The paper did not name Hilary Clinton as the rival, however, it did suggest employing media resources to undermine leading US political figures.
The US Reaction
Western Intelligence Agencies had a fair awareness about the documents for about a few months now. Weeks after the 2016 summit, GRU hackers raided the servers of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and released thousands of emails that were aimed at hurting Hilary Clinton’s election campaign.
Donald Trump was unavailable for comment. However, his spokesperson, Liz Harrington, issued a statement, “This is disgusting. It’s fake news, just like ‘RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA’ was fake news. It’s just the Radical Left crazies doing whatever they can to demean everybody on the right.
It’s fiction, and nobody was tougher on Russia than me, including on the pipeline, and sanctions. At the same time, we got along with Russia. Russia respected us, China respected us, Iran respected us, North Korea respected us.
And the world was a much safer place than it is now with mentally unstable leadership.”
Although we are still in the dark as to what steps were taken to destabilize the country’s political scenario, one thing that can be concluded from the leaked document is that Russian Federation has deep insight and knowledge about the US politics, and with proper strategic management, they actually attempted to cause chaos in the West.
