Aug 25: Journalism in India means revolution. Journalism in India was started to spread revolutionary ideas. The pages of Indian history are full of revolutionary ideas and their pen, whether it is in the form of British or as Indian. Whoever joined journalism had only one objective, social reform and raising voice against tyranny. It must be strange to hear that the British also became the inspiration for revolutionary ideas! Yes, journalism in India was started by James Augustus Hickey on 29 January 1780 by taking out the Bengal Gazette from Kolkata.

The British officials and the regime were against any form of mass awakening and journalism. As a result, they suppressed Hickey. His press property was confiscated and he was imprisoned. In the 1780s, he was given five thousand rupees. Had to pay a fine of rupees.

One such English editor happened to be William. He also tried to follow in Hickey’s footsteps. In 1785 he took out the Bengal Journal. But he too left his property and left India after getting upset. The purpose of both of them was to get rid of the British power. At the same time, there is a glimpse of social reform in the journalism after this. The first name in this comes Samvad Kaumudi. As a result, a section of the society became hostile to it.

If seen, the development of Hindi language is also hidden in these letters and journalism. Hickey, William and Charles laid the foundation of fearless journalism in Bengal. These newspapers may be published in English but they kept working to shake the British rule. Now there was a need for our own language, which could connect the common man. This language became Hindi, which changed the meaning of journalism. In which forward Bharatendu Harishchandra, Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Madan Mohan Malviya, Mahatma Gandhi and Vishnu Paradkar carried forward. When the soot granddaughter of sycophancy goes up, then everyone’s soul starts crying. Then questions are asked where did those words of Akbar Allahabadi who used to say that if a cannon is in front, then take out the newspaper.

Today the field of journalism has become very broad. In this, not only newspapers, channels and radio, but digital writing, designing, public relations, advertising, printing, internet and social media have also become an integral part of it. Seeing this, Meraj Alam, who is touching success in the digital world, says, “Today the world has become more dependent on the media. It is no longer confined to newspapers and TV channels. It has greatly expanded its scope. Now the demand for technical writing on web portals and websites has increased. Now the future in the field of communication needs to be creative in writing and speaking as well as technically.
