The new map released by China showing its territories quickly caused an international level of controversy due to it claiming several territories as its own which was not true.

The Chinese Natural Resources Ministry on Monday came out with the 2023 edition of the “standard map” and it included several regions under the borders of China that it doesn’t have actual claim to.

One of the biggest ones was including India’s state of Arunachal Pradesh and the occupied area of Aksai Chin, but that wasn’t all. The map also incorporated Taiwan and large parts of the South China Sea where China is involved with various terroritial disputes.

India quickly rejected the map as anything official and officials called these claims absurd. Now, it seems that various other countries are also joining in rejecting the map.

Countries Rejecting The Map

India was the first one to reject the map right after it was released. Arindam Bagchi, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs in a press release stated that “We have today lodged a strong protest through diplomatic channels with the Chinese side on the so-called 2023 “standard map” of China that lays claim to India’s territory.”

Bagchi further added “We reject these claims as they have no basis. Such steps by the Chinese side only complicate the resolution of the boundary question.”

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also spoke about it at a media event saying “China has even in the past put out maps which claim the territories which are not China’s, which belong to other countries. This is an old habit of theirs. It is not something which is new. It started in the 1950s.

We are very clear what our territories are. This government is very clear about what we need to defend our territories. You can already see that on our borders. I think there should be no doubt about that. Making absurd claims does not make other people’s territories yours.”

Soon after the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam also rejected the map and stated that it was baseless.

According to reports, the Philippines called out China and asked it “to act responsibly and abide by its obligations” of the 2016 arbitral ruling and international laws that had given the verdict that the line had no legal validity.

Malaysia has also reportedly filed a diplomatic protest regarding the map.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jeff Liu speaking on the matter said Taiwan was “absolutely not a part of the People’s Republic of China.” And that “No matter how the Chinese government twists its position on Taiwan’s sovereignty, it cannot change the objective fact of our country’s existence.”

Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the latest one to officially reject the map with spokesperson Pham Thu Hang giving a statement that Vietnam “resolutely rejects any claims in the East Sea by China that are based on the dashed line.”
