Fact Check: Top Reasons Why US Is The Real Hellhole

-

If you search for “the most developed nation” on Google, the results would read: The United States of America. Now search “most school shootings” or “worst abortion laws”, and the results would be surprisingly the same.

Funny how that works.

When Trump reposted a four-page transcript by podcaster Michael Savage calling India and China “Hellholes”, he surely did cross a line. Yet again.

The United States has long sold itself as a dream and the world’s self-appointed moral ideal, and has often done so by demeaning other nations, often ignoring its own failures.

Because before pointing fingers outwards at other nations, should the “most powerful nation in the world” not hold itself to account?

The “Hellhole Nations” Remark

The controversy began when President Donald Trump reposted a post about a commentary made by the podcaster Michael Savage on the American laws on birthright citizenship and the abuse of the privilege by the Indians and Chinese.

“A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet”, Savage said.

India’s foreign ministry did not stay quiet. The ministry called the remarks “obviously uninformed, inappropriate, and in poor taste,” adding that they “certainly do not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship, which has long been based on mutual respect and shared interests.”

This isn’t the first time that President Trump has made a remark like this about another country, especially one with which it shares diplomatic relations. But if he were to begin talking about “hellholes”, perhaps it should start at home.

The Great American Dream

This post, along with many others, is evidence of how the USA functions. When the ones in power choose to turn a blind eye towards their own loopholes and demean other nations, the gap between the myth and the reality becomes almost impossible to ignore. Having said that, let’s go through a few facts that make India a more progressive nation in ways the USA doesn’t want to acknowledge.

Never a Female President

The United States has, for decades, shown itself as the bearer of freedom to the whole world. Be it its own or of other nations, there’s no doubt how the US, specifically, President Trump, has taken credit for ending wars and bringing freedom. And yet, not once in its 250 years of existence has America trusted a woman to lead it.

Not once.

On the other hand, India elected Indira Gandhi as Prime Minister in 1966, back when the US was still fighting for the rights of its own people. Then, when Kamala Harris ran for the presidential election in the United States, the world hoped for a change. However, Harris lost the Presidential power to Donald Trump.

The nation that markets freedom as its greatest product has still never trusted a woman with its highest office.

The American Take On Abortion

This brings us to the next point. When the US overturned the ruling of Roe v. Wade in 2022, the whole world watched in disbelief. The decision, known as Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, caused a constitutional right that had been protecting women’s right to abortion for nearly fifty years to cease to exist overnight.

This ruling gave power to individual states to make decisions around abortion, causing almost thirteen states, as of 2026, to impose a total abortion ban. And just like that, the US also took away women’s rights to decide what’s good for their own bodies. India and China, along with many other nations to which America doesn’t fail to preach its ideals, support legal abortion rights for women.

The American Healthcare Disaster

A poll by the West Health-Gallup Centre on Healthcare in America records that nearly 23 per cent of Americans believe the US healthcare is “in a state of crisis” and 47 per cent think it has “major problems”.

Even American doctors criticise their own system, especially health insurance giants that lead to delay to important medical procedures. Further, as per the Commonwealth Fund, Americans spend the most on healthcare, approximately $4.9tn in 2023, yet have the worst healthcare.

Dr Ed Weisbart, former chief medical officer for Express Scripts, explained to The Guardian, “There’s good evidence that these kinds of delays literally kill people. For some people, this isn’t just an inconvenience and an annoyance and an aggravation.

It’s a death sentence, and the only reason the insurance companies do that is to maximize their profits. The fact that they might be killing you is not in the equation of what they care about.”

And yet, America, the nation with a crippling healthcare system, points fingers at other nations, at India, at China, the so-called hellholes.

The American Gun Laws

Not to mention, the country that spends so much of its time mocking other nations also cannot seem to stop shooting itself. Literally.

In an advisory meeting, U.S. Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy said, “We lose nearly 50,000 people each year to gun violence, but there are millions more who are affected by its reverberating impact.”

“The role that this advisory can play is to help people see and understand the full extent of the harms of gun violence, and to move this issue from the realm of politics to the realm of public health.”

As per the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 48,000 people died of gun violence in 2022 alone. That’s nearly 132 people dying due to gun violence every day. A country that calls itself the land of freedom has made peace with a level of violence most democracies would never tolerate.

The US Racism Towards Immigrants

The country built by immigrants has, especially in recent years, made it clear that it isn’t very welcoming towards them. Be it the time-to-time imposition of tariffs or remarks on their native countries, America certainly doesn’t fail to show its real attitude towards those who go there with a dream.

In a February 2026 survey of Indian Americans, conducted with YouGov, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace recorded that nearly 40 per cent of the respondents have considered leaving the US owing to their frustration with American politics.

As if the domestic failures weren’t enough, the US recently launched airstrikes on Iran, along with Israel, leading to the death of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. What it also resulted in is issues concerning the Strait of Hormuz that has led to a global fuel crisis.

Who is The Real Hellhole?

A country that has never trusted a woman to lead it, has a broken healthcare system, lets its own children die at gunpoint and resents the very immigrants it was built by, should consider some statistics before demeaning other nations.

Maybe the next time America decides to go looking for hellholes, perhaps it should take a look at itself. The results, as we’ve discussed, often have a habit of pointing right back home.
