Donald Trump, the current US President, has been facing the heat of Indians in light of not just the recent tariffs, but his comments about the country and its economy. Recently, the deadline passed on the import tariffs that the US had applied on various trading partners, where for India, they raised import duties to 25%.
Many experts and analysts have shown concern over this and how it might impact Indian businesses, especially those that rely heavily on imports entering the US.
There is speculation, though, that this is just a ploy by the White House to put pressure on India to reduce its own tariffs on American exports that, according to reports, the US claims are “the highest in the world.”
Soon after this, though, Donald Trump’s comments about India being a dead economy have only further fueled anger against him, with many Indian netizens calling him out for this.
What Did Donald Trump Say?
In a Truth Social post made on July 30, 2025, Donald Trump wrote about India’s high tariffs and placed that as a reason why the US has not done business with India. He also complained about another reason for the high tariffs being due to India’s military equipment from Russia.
Trump wrote, “Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country. Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST.”
The insult, however, came in another July 31, 2025, post, where he claimed that India and Russia have dead economies. This was again posted to justify the new tariff rates and was just a repetition of his earlier comments about Indian tariffs.
He wrote, “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together.”
This clearly angered a lot of Indian netizens, who immediately took to trolling Trump for his childish comments and attempts to pressure the country.

Many politicians also joined the bandwagon, trolling Trump for his comment. Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi posted a tweet about the upcoming luxury real estate project, Trump Tower in India, by Panchshil Realty.
Chaturvedi captioned a photo of the billboard about the project in Pune, stating ” ‘Dead economy’ but yet a Trump Tower Address (sic)”.
Tax expert Ajay Rotti also wrote, “Dead economy! But frustrated that our team isn’t closing negotiations quickly! If we are a dead economy, why do they need a deal so badly??”
Another user wrote, “‘Dead economy’ More like ‘Sleeping giant’. India is the 5th‑largest economy, growing fast, backed by young talent, tech strength & rising manufacturing. Trump’s tariff & rhetoric are noise—India is building momentum, not going backwards.”
Akshat Garg, assistant vice president at Choice Wealth, a financial services firm in Mumbai, spoke about this whole issue, stating that “Overnight, the US-India trade equation shifted from tense to turbulent.”
Garg further added that the tariffs “feel less like structured policy and more like a blunt-force political message.”
