The deadly and tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, which killed around 260 people, as per current estimates, has been the topic of conversation since its occurrence. Not only the level of tragedy and death it resulted in, but questions about security checks and quality control in airplanes were raised.
Alongside this, the news of one lone survivor to the crash, where initially it had been thought that there were none at all, shook everyone. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national, was the sole survivor of the crash, since reports claim that his seat, ’11A’, was near the emergency exit of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and he somehow managed to jump out and survive.
He was taken to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for medical treatment, where he was discharged a week after the crash. Vishwas had been travelling with his brother Ajay, and he took part in performing his last rites along with family earlier this week.
Given all that the man has suffered in this short amount of time, there are some people who have been spreading fake news and information about how he had lied about even being on board in the first place, and was arrested for this.
Spreading Of Fake News
Over the past few days, several social media posts have come to light, making claims that the Air India plane crash survivor has been arrested or that he was lying about his presence in the aircraft at the time of the crash.

It was also noticed that some of these social media posts had exact same wording, as if someone copy-pasted a particular template.
Incidentally, most of these posts were seen to be made from accounts that place them in various parts of Africa, mostly Nigeria and Ghana.
Fact Checks Clear The Air
Fact-checking reports soon cleared the air and clarified that most of these posts were false.
A fact check by Newchecker made on June 16 claimed that there were no credible reports about the passenger getting arrested for “his involvement in the plane crash,” after doing a Google search on the keywords “Vishwash Kumar Ramesh” and “arrested.”
A further scan of official X/Twitter handles of DGP Gujarat, Gujarat Police, and Ahmedabad Police also did not reveal any statements that the passenger had been arrested.
Additionally, Jaipal Singh Rathore, Additional Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad City, confirmed to Newschecker in a telephonic conversation that “Ramesh has not been arrested in any case, further confirming that the viral claim is fabricated.”
A different fact check done by Press Trust of India (PTI)’s Fact Check Unit, called PTI Fact Check, also confirmed the same findings. Running a check on rumours of Ramesh being “arrested at his home for allegedly lying about being on the ill-fated flight,” they similarly contacted Rathore, who again confirmed that the survivor had not been arrested for any case.
Neither report found any media reports published about the survivor’s arrest based on various keyword searches on Google.
They did find a June 12 Hindustan Times report that included a picture of Ramesh’s boarding pass that further confirmed his seat being 11A, his name being “Ramesh VishwashKumar,” along with the flight number being AI171, time of boarding, and departure.
The immigration stamp on the boarding pass also showed he was allowed to board by the authorities.
A June 12 report of the Times of India also showed his name on the official passenger list, according to the PTI fact check.
The report ultimately declared that “the Desk found that the claim made in the social media post of the lone survivor in the Air India plane crash, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh’s arrest, is false. He did board the AI 171 plane and was admitted after he survived the deadly crash.”
This is not the first time that questions about the authenticity of the survivor have been raised. Since the day news came out about how the crash had only one sole survivor, conspiracy theories and posts have been going around about how this was fake news, the survivor wasn’t actually on the plane, how he could be a plant, and many others.
Recently, actor Suchitra Krishnamoorthi came under fire after questioning the survivor’s story and claiming that he was lying.
In a June 19, 2025, X/Twitter post, Suchitra wrote, “So this #vishwaskumarramesh lied about being a passenger on the plane & the only survivor? This is seriously weird. Didn’t his family in the UK corroborate his story? What about his brother’s funeral that he was seen giving kandha to? Deserve not only some serious punishment but some mental asylum time if this is true uff.”
Although the post is now deleted, it received severe backlash, and several users called her out for spreading fake news. They also stressed that the survivor’s story had been verified by the hospital in Ahmedabad.
Post this, she tweeted a public apology, writing, “Took out my last tweet on the Air India crash survivor. Seems to be false news circulated for God knows what reason. My apologies.”
