The name Neville Roy Singham is trending everywhere after a New York Times investigation has once again pulled him center stage, talking about his ties with the Chinese government and funding the propaganda arm worldwide.
The report was used today during a Lok Sabha session by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey who believed that it exposed the “tukde tukde gang” and “some media”, and alleged that Congress was being funded by China to be against the Central government.
But what is this report really saying?
What Did The Investigation Reveal?
As per the New York Times investigation, they found that the No Cold War group “is part of a lavishly funded influence campaign that defends China and pushes its propaganda” and that Neville Roy Singham an American tech mogul millionaire is somewhat in the middle of all this.
The report “tracked hundreds of millions of dollars to groups linked to Mr. Singham that mix progressive advocacy with Chinese government talking points.” The investigation claimed that Singham had joined a Communist Party workshop last month that talked about promoting the party globally.
It also talked about how not just Newsclick, but another outlet from his network has co-produced a YouTube show that is partly financed by Shanghai’s propaganda department.

While Singham denies any relation of his with the Chinese government, the investigation found that he actually shared office space and staff members in his groups with a company that aims to promote “the miracles that China has created on the world stage.”
It also alleged that Singham and his associates are at the forefront of a “smokeless war” led by the CPC with the goal being “to disguise propaganda as independent content.”
The report pointed out how 4 nonprofits were used to fund money using UPS store mailboxes in Illinois, Wisconsin and New York. From here millions of dollars were sent across the world such as “a South African political party, YouTube channels in the United States and nonprofits in Ghana and Zambia. In Brazil, records show, money flowed to a group that produces a publication, Brasil de Fato, that intersperses articles about land rights with praise for Xi Jinping.”
Among all of these was also the Indian news site ‘Newsclick’ where corporate filings in New Delhi show that his network had financed the news site and “sprinkled its coverage with Chinese government talking points.”
One of the videos on the site was found to be saying “China’s history continues to inspire the working classes.”
This is not the first time that Newsclick and Neville Roy Singham have been under scrutiny. In fact, much before the NYT investigation, India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) had found in their own investigation the ties between the two after finding that the news sites received Rs. 38 crores in funds from outside the country.
The source was traced back to Singham who had been alleged to have close ties with the propaganda group of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
The investigation, conducted in 2021 found that the funds were sent to the site over 3 years from 2018 to 2021.
