The All India Football Federation (AIFF) recently decided to turn down the opportunity to host Argentina’s national football team for a friendly match.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) approached the AIFF with the proposal, but the high appearance fee demanded by Argentina was beyond the AIFF’s current budgetary limitations. This decision disappointed many fans who were eager to witness Lionel Messi’s presence in India.
Financial Constraints And Lack Of Sponsorship
The AIFF’s primary reason for declining the opportunity to host Argentina’s national football team stems from the substantial cost involved. According to reports, Argentina requested an appearance fee ranging between $4 million and $5 million (Rs 32-40 crore) for playing a friendly match in India.
Unfortunately, the AIFF stated that it did not possess the necessary financial resources to meet such demands. Despite the AIFF’s interest in arranging the match, they emphasized the need for a strong sponsor to support the event financially. However, no such sponsor came forward, making it infeasible to pursue the match.
Consideration Of Financial Prudence
Given the financial constraints faced by the AIFF, they had to prioritize their budget and allocate funds to various footballing activities and development programs within the country.
While hosting Argentina’s national team would have undoubtedly garnered immense popularity and excitement among Indian football fans, the AIFF had to make a prudent decision based on their financial realities.

Balancing the expenses associated with organizing a high-profile international match against their other commitments, the AIFF had to prioritize their resources in a way that would be beneficial for the overall growth of football in India.
AIFF General Secretary Shaji Prabhakaran confirmed to Times Of India that hosting such a popular team was not possible in India due to a lack of capital.
He said, “The Argentina FA reached out to us for a friendly, but it just was not possible to arrange such a huge sum. For such a match to happen here, we need the backing of a strong partner. The kind of money that Argentina command is huge and we have limitations in terms of our economic situation in football.”
Implications Of The Decision
The decision made by the AIFF to reject Argentina’s proposal has left some fans disappointed. The prospect of witnessing Lionel Messi, one of the world’s greatest footballers, playing in India was met with anticipation and excitement.
Nonetheless, the AIFF had to consider the long-term sustainability of its operations and the overall development of football in the country. While Argentina’s national team had previously played in India in 2011, drawing a massive crowd of over 85,000 spectators, the financial landscape has since evolved, leading to different decisions being made today.
The AIFF’s decision to decline the opportunity to host Argentina’s national football team for a friendly match was primarily driven by financial constraints and the lack of a suitable sponsor.
Although disappointing for fans eager to see Lionel Messi in action, the AIFF had to prioritize its financial stability and the development of football in India. While missed opportunities like this can be disheartening, the AIFF’s focus remains on fostering the growth and progress of football within the country.
