5 Tips to Save Energy in Your Home

-

If you’re looking to reduce your energy use at home, there are several ways to do it. Whether the intention is to make your energy bill smaller or help the environment here are some behavioral changes or home adjustments you can make to save energy:

1. Check Your Home Appliances

If you look at your energy bill, you’ll see that home appliances have a big role in it. The air conditioner, dryer, and thermostat are part of almost all family routines and can be used daily.

Make sure to only use those appliances when absolutely needed and ensure that they are always in good condition and working as it should. Get the home appliance repair if they are not functioning well, since that may be the cause of the bigger energy spend.

Another solution is to only purchase appliances with the energy star label on it. That means that the appliance consumes less energy while being used and even less when on standby.

2. Replace All The Light Bulbs

LED lights consume from 25-80% less energy than the traditional and common incandescent light bulbs while lasting 25 times longer.

They may cost you a little bit more, but LED lights will be a great investment as the time passes since you’ll notice a decrease in energy usage and less frequently needed to change.

3. Replace Your Windows To Energy Efficient Ones

Energy-efficient windows are probably the solution you are looking for. Replacing your old windows will prevent your family from keeping the lights on even during the day as the natural light will fill your home.

Also, there are glasses with no heat-absorption technology — the low-E glass has a coating that reduces the need to use the heat while reflecting the light.

 4. Use Less Hot Water

Water heating is one of the major spendings on your energy bill. Having an energy-efficient water heater is the first step to reduce the expenses. Choose one that will meet the needs of your family while using better fuel. Turning down the thermostat on the water heater is also a good solution.

Another point of attention is that your washing and laundry machines are using hot water to complete their cycles and you probably don’t even know. Set them to only use cold water to cut down their energy use.

And if you suspect your washer is using more energy due to the malfunction, you can always hire a professional appliance repair technician to help you inspect the current status.

5. Adjust Your Behavior

The last step you can follow to save energy in your home is to adjust some behaviors from you and your family that may be contributing to the big energy use at the end of the month.

If you have the habit to leave the lights on after exiting the room, make sure to come back to turn it off. The same thing applies to the air conditioner, heater, TV, and radio, if you are not in the room anymore, turn everything off.

There are tools that can be easily installed at your home which will tell you where is your biggest energy spending. Then, you can go and diminish them.

  1. Hey, I love your article. It is a well researched piece and it talks about so many ways to save electricity. I would just like to add that when I was researching how to check electricity consumption, I came across the fact that installing a power monitoring device is a great solution. These devices are cheap and easy to use. I have been using OHM Assistant for my home because this device has an electricity usage monitor app that makes it the best energy monitor. It gives all the required data analysis through the phone in a simplified way.
