August 31, 1997: The world lost Princess Diana today, August 31, 1997, in a terrible car accident in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, France.

The Princess of Wales was travelling with her love interest Dodi Al Fayed, the son of Mohamed Al Fayed (owner of the Harrods department store) in Paris, accompanied by a bodyguard, driver Henri Paul and paparazzi, when their car slammed into a support column, flipped, and landed in front of the heavy road traffic.

The driver was trying to dodge a paparazzi on a motorcycle but lost control of the car, which rammed into a pillar at the speed of 60 km/hour.

Sources claim that the driver and Al Fayed died on the spot. However, doctors tried their level best to save the 36-year-old Princess but failed to do so. Her death was declared at 5.00 a.m. today, at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, France.

Her untimely goodbye has got the entire world mourning. It is a severe blow to her two young sons, William (15) and Harry (12).

Many theories have come into the picture regarding the sudden demise of the Princess. While some say it was the paparazzi’s fault that the car accident took place, others believe that the driver was drunk.

Some also believe that it wasn’t merely an unfortunate crash but rather a well-plotted murder. Mohamed Al Fayed had put forward several allegations after his son’s death, saying that the British royal family was involved in the killing of the couple because Diana was pregnant with his son’s child.

These allegations led to the commencement of ‘Operation Paget’ by the British Government in 2007, to investigate the matter and later concluded that her death was no conspiracy, but just a tragic accident of negligent driving.

Princess Diana is remembered for her kindness and the way she ended stereotypes. She was only 20 when she got married to Prince Charles. The couple announced their divorce in August 1996. She was a strong woman and continues to inspire people with her strength and strong ideologies.
