On February 16, the Supreme Court’s decision to reduce the amount of water from the Cauvery river being given to Tamil Nadu by Karnataka added fuel to the already smouldering conflict on this issue between the two states.

However, protests in Chennai have now reached a whole new level, with April 5 being declared a statewide bandh from dawn to dusk.

Furore over the banning of Jallikattu for the second year in a row and the cordoning off of Marina Beach to prevent protests and mass gatherings from taking place has further added to the violence on the streets.
