Watch: Andhra Pradesh Gets Its First “All Women” Railway Station

442

On International Women’s Day, a great progress took place in the country’s accommodation of women in the workplace as Chandragiri railway station of Andhra Pradesh was transformed to a place with only female employees. Yet this development of an all women railway station here has one major disadvantage to itself.

What is disheartening is that the small and far-flung station with only eight passenger train halts per day is not a very safe place for the working women.

The newly employed staff has been transferred from Tirupati, Renigunta and Chittoor stations which are quite far from Chandragiri. Accommodation facilities are lacking and this poses a major downside of the measure.

The female crew of Gandhinagar railway station has also previously complained regarding the awkward situations they face regularly with peeping men and their unruly behavior. Men in rural areas are taken aback to see women in uniforms and interacting with them outside of their comfort zones.

This results in a falling rate of female employment as even to this day, women only contribute to 17 percent of the national GDP. Only a reversal of this situation can ensure the country’s overall progress.
