In recent weeks, there has been a concerning increase in the use of counterfeit marksheets and education certificates to fraudulently obtain student visas for the United Kingdom. This surge in student visa fraud cases has raised alarm, with multiple individuals falling victim to fraudulent agents.
The Sahar police have disclosed six cases between September 9 and October 1, shedding light on a disturbing trend that involves individuals from Gujarat, Punjab, and Uttarakhand. This rise in fraudulent activities appears to be linked to the increasing attractiveness of the United Kingdom as a global hub for higher education.
Lovemeet Singh’s Deception (October 1)
On October 1, Lovemeet Singh, aged 29, was intercepted by immigration officers at Mumbai International Airport while trying to board Air India flight AI-131. Singh’s documents raised suspicion as he was from Punjab but possessed a BCom certificate from North East Frontier Technical University in Arunachal Pradesh.
Upon investigation, Singh confessed to obtaining his student visa through forged documents. He had sought the assistance of an agent named Abhinav Kumar, who charged him Rs 15 lakh to arrange the fake educational and other necessary documents for a UK student visa.
Umang Patel’s Counterfeit BTech Certificate (October 1)
On the same day, immigration officers detained Umang Patel, a 29-year-old from Gujarat, who was preparing to travel to the UK. Patel had secured his student visa using a counterfeit BTech certificate provided by a Surat-based agent named Bhargav Bhai, according to police reports.

Gurupratap Singh’s Multiple Fraudulent Documents (September 30)
On September 30, Gurupratap Singh, aged 22 and hailing from Uttarakhand, was apprehended with seven fraudulent educational documents, including a bogus BCom certificate.
Singh had paid Rs. 15 lakh to an agent to obtain these documents. His counterfeit documents indicated an intention to pursue an MSc in Data Science and Marketing at Goldsmiths University of London. However, Singh’s deception was uncovered because his certificate indicated a commerce background, while he had secured admission for MSc studies.
Root Causes of the Surge in Student Visa Fraud
The surge in student visa fraud cases can be attributed to a combination of factors. Notably, the recent efforts by the UK Consulate to expedite and streamline the visa application process have made it more accessible.
Additionally, the growing number of opportunities for Indian students seeking education in the UK has increased the attractiveness of obtaining a UK student visa.
However, this increased demand has also led to a rise in fraudulent agents who take advantage of students’ aspirations to study and work in the UK, offering to fabricate documents for a hefty fee.
Legal Consequences
Sahar police have taken swift action in all six cases, charging the individuals under the Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and 471 (using as genuine a forged document). Those involved in student visa fraud face serious legal consequences, which may include fines and imprisonment.
The police’s proactive efforts to apprehend individuals involved in such fraudulent activities are essential in maintaining the integrity of the visa application process and protecting the interests of genuine students.
The surge in student visa fraud cases targeting the United Kingdom is a matter of concern, with several individuals being arrested for using counterfeit documents to secure their visas. The underlying causes include the streamlined visa application process and the high demand for UK education.
However, law enforcement’s vigilance in investigating and prosecuting these cases is essential to deter fraudulent agents and ensure that the visa application process remains transparent and credible.
