ED had the honour of attending the just completed event organized by the Young FICCI Ladies Organization (YFLO), which was attended by popular names like Kalki Koechlin and Dilip Cherian.
Kalki Koechlin is no newbie to the world of feminism, having been an active and vocal one since forever. She has not only participated in campaigns revolving around feminism but also spoken out about, outright calls herself one and written poems and plays around the movement.
Kalki delivered a long and lengthy monologue at the event, spanning almost 17 minutes titled ‘Just Another Rant’.
Amitabh Bachchan has recently been in the news regarding his letter to his granddaughters, where he talked that they too carry the family name and the legacy along with it. That their being girls, does not mean that they are ‘paraya dhan’ and instead carry as much power as any son would.
Both are in the limelight due to their participation in the past few days, in highly feminist related events.
And have to say that, both are doing some excellent work in bringing about the double standards and discrimination, that females still have to go through.
Kalki in her passionate monologue, she raised some excellent points, about how women are literally taught from childhood only, that they need the protection and support of men.
From fairy tales to the things taught in school to even how these girls see their own parents act, all they learn from this is that women must stay in the kitchen while men go out to work.
I know, it might seem like such an old statement, but I am not wrong in that this line is still valid even now.
Mr. Bachchan on other hand has appeared in this video, a collaboration between Blush and Pink, where he recites various thoughts that go through an everyday modern woman.
And frankly, I could not agree more with each line of the video.
I myself have thought many of the same exact thoughts, and there is no lie in any of them.
So, definitely, it is a great video, which will get a lot of views and people will talk and discuss and make long Facebook posts and all.
But somehow, I feel that that is where the train stops. People talk and discuss and fight with each other on social media platforms over such issues, but it does not somehow actually reach the everyday person.
It does not reach the people it should reach, and whose mentality such videos and monologues should be changing.
Signing off, I would just like to ask one question, these videos and monologues can only work till a limit. After that it is up to us, the common people, to actually implement the ideas and changes they suggest.
So my question is, what have you, doesn’t matter girl or boy, learned from such things? And how have you folded the new thoughts into your life?
