History is sprinkled with instances of common people raging against higher authorities by adopting a form of protest. People have gone to huge extents just to get their point across. While we are usually familiar with protests ranging from the most violent to the non-violent or passive protests, we can also see examples of the most absurd protests in recent history.

Vegan protesters spilling milk.

Two British oil protesters made the headlines last week by throwing cans of soup at the famous Van Gogh painting ‘Sunflowers’. Their aim was to highlight the fossil fuel policies of erstwhile UK Prime Minister Liz Truss.

They said they would not have done it if a glass cover was absent, but still it comes off as absurd. Also, vegan protesters were recently seen wasting liters of milk on the floors of a supermarket. Similarly here are six of the most absurd protests that baffled a lot of people.

1. Naked Protests:

The Ukraine-based group FEMEN is mainly composed of young women who intend to use their female beauty to attack patriarchy. But the main bold feature of their protest is going nude or partially nude in public.

They are also known to be violent and militaristic and target religion, exploitation of women, and political dictatorship.

Similar to FEMEN is the American organization Go Topless, which supports gender equality by excluding upper clothing in their outdoor get-up. It offers information regarding each US state’s nudity laws on their ‘boob map’.

2. Stinky Protest:

In 2014, a French farmers’ union decided to act upon their disenchantment with low prices of food and high costs of fertilizers. They took it up a notch to prove just how foul they thought the market prices were.

They hoarded a gigantic load of manure and slurry and dropped them on the streets. They also distributed rotten vegetables and other gooey stuff on the roads and left them at a water treatment office.

3. Face Sitters:

In December 2014, the UK government under David Cameron introduced censorship laws that regulated the propriety of porn.

Many protesters, including sex workers and campaigners staged a protest before the British parliament by simulating sexual acts. Most prominently people sat on each other’s faces, while shocking onlookers from around the world.

4. Lobster Empathy:

PETA, animal rights campaign group, established a Lobster Empathy Center in Maine in 2008. The center’s aim, as the name suggests, was to enhance empathy for lobsters and other marine crustaceans.

The group referred to fish as “sea kittens” and gave rubber bands and stuffed lobster toys bearing the slogan “Lobsters are friends, not food” to visitors. The main purpose was to make people feel guilty about ordering seafood.

5. Spelling Protest:

At the 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee, members of the American Literacy Council protested against conventional spellings of English words.

These people believed that current spelling rules hinder reading and writing, and sought to change the English language spelling to match the phonetic pronunciation. Supporters apparently also believe that this change would make the language more intuitive and simpler to understand.

6. Milk squirting:

In 2008, Brussels, Belgium faced an unusual form of protest when over 2500 farmers were incensed about dropping prices of milk and unreasonable quotas.

Organized by the European Milk Board, they drove their trucks and tractors into the city and also brought cows and other farm animals. The result was huge chaos with farmers squirting and spraying cow milk at the police, after dumping millions of liters of milk in their fields.

So the first two decades of the 21st century have already witnessed so many bizarre protests. When another social or economic issue emerges, we can be on the lookout for more ridiculous or better, creative protests by people.
